GU raids Orapa United

GU

High flying Gaborone United has this week completed the signing of The Zebras attacker, Onkabetse Makgantai from Orapa United, as the club consolidate its squad depth on its way to first title since 2009.

The arrival of Makgantai at The Reds follows what appeared to be protracted talks between the club and Orapa United regarding compensation for the forward, who had six months left of his contract with the Boteti based outfit.

According to an informant, Nicolas Zackhem, the multi-millionaire who is also the chief financier of Gaborone United, parted with P120 000 as compensation to Orapa United.

Makgantai’s move to the Money Machine makes him the third player to dump Orapa United, to follow the duo of Thero Setsile and Mothusi Johnson.

Zackhem has reportedly paid P60 000 to acquired ‘Mahachi’ from the Debswana mining giants.

Meanwhile, Makgantai has been on the sidelines after the club granted him a leave of about three months following physical altercation with Ugandan midfielder, Lawrence Ndunga who later on terminated his contract with Orapa United

Bakang Moipone who is the player agents, when quizzed about the prospect of the player playing aboard said, it was imperative to seek a local move since the player has been inactive for about three months.

“It was better we get him a local move so that he can gain his confidence back. We will see what happens afterwards,” said Moipone.

He further pointed out that the player started training with new team on Wednesday and might be available for selection today (Saturday) when the log leaders takes on his former side (Orapa United).

Nevertheless, Gaborone United head coach Innocent Morapedi believes that the arrival of  former Orapa United striker, will boost his side ahead of what promises to be exciting second round of the 2021/22 Premier League season.

“It is a major signing for us and we are very excited to have him in our team. It is not my first time to work with him, I have worked with him at national Under 20 and I know he can score goals for us. I have seen him grow over the years and with the games coming thick and fast, he will surely add that value to our squad as we push for the championship,” said Morapedi

Morapedi further sent gratitude to the club’s executive for the support since the beginning of the season.

“We have obviously identified the areas which we felt the club needs strengthening and the management has been supportive. As the technical team, we need a supportive executive for you to deliver,” he said.

Gaborone United have reshuffled their attacking options over a period of time while keeping both veterans, Joel Mogorosi and Kekaetswe Moloi on the fold.

United’s technical team complained bitterly last season at the lack of productivity from their attackers but they hope that the ever-consistent Moloi and now with Makgantai and the inform Thatayaone Kgamanyane, aided perhaps by another newly acquisitions, Mpho Kgaswane and also the inform Thero Setsile and Obonye Maome will add fire upfront.
