They say it is never too early to start working on your dreams. The saying is true for Cynthia Thanda. Cynthia started pursuing her passion and dream of being an author after completing her Senior School in 2017.
The 23 year old, fourth year, Bachelor of Media Studies student at the University of Botswana (UB), said she has always had a passion for writing. She said, “I am a fiction romance novelists but I believe that in the long run I will work on different genres and not just focus in just one. I sponsored my first book from my school living allowance and the other books were sponsored by sales made from my first book.
My first novel is titled ‘Dirty Laundry’ and my other two are titled ‘Dirty Closet’ and ‘Smooth Criminal. I have also written and published two short stories titled ‘The Adventure’, and ‘Go To Sleep’. I have my own publishing company called the Melts Publishers and Arts and I also write articles for a website called, PanAfrikanist.”
Cynthia noted that she has always loved writing and reading since her primary school days. She highlighted that she did not start off by writing stories because her passion at that time was in writing poetry. She said because she loved singing and could not sing, she substituted singing with writing poetry.
Cynthia said her passion for writing short stories started when she was in Junior School, “my passion for writing stories began when I was doing form 1. I had a hardcover that was dedicated for my stories, I would write stories and exchange with my friend Tamara Kenose. Tamara enjoyed writing as much as I did but we were just doing it for fun since we were kids. My Junior school, English teacher, Ms. Moemba was the person who really stirred my passion for English to the point where it became my obsession.
My Senior School teacher, Ms. Ntabeng (MHRSP) was really my mentor. She would read my script and give me constructive feedback. I really valued her opinion and she was the first person I asked for opinion regarding my career path. I asked her if she saw me as a publisher and her response was ‘of course’. Those words gave me the courage and stirred my determination to push my dream into being a reality. Writing has always been my escape route from the world because I am an introvert, and honestly speaking writing really built my confidence.”
Her words of encouragement to anyone who wants to start working on their dreams was that, “the biggest risk in life is not to take the risk at all. That has been my personal motto and i would encourage everyone to personalize that motto as well. I believe that people should do what makes them happy. The best time for everyone to start working on their dreams is now.”
In May 2014, controversial pint sized musician, Odirile Sento married his longtime girlfriend, Kagiso Sento in a glamorous wedding, not knowing that eight years later, the two will be fighting until the very end of their holy union.
Mental health is one critical element in someone’s life but gloomily, it is often overlooked. Topics centered on mental health and depression dominate the public discourse. The national conversation surrounding mental wellness, both online and offline has aided in the stigma of suffering from depression being removed, slowly but surely.
