KANYO M unveils traditional bridal collection

Every bride wants- and deserves- to be showered with compliments on her wedding day and nothing compliments a bride more than the praises for her gown. It lets the bride know that her fashion palettes are in tune with fashion trends or even ahead.

As a guest (and someone who loves the bride), the idea is for you to be choked up, tongue-tied and finding yourself scrambling for words when you see the bride looking exceptionally beautiful, its almost an unwritten law for guests to gush over the bride. And thats where prominent fashion designer, Boikanyo Molale comes in.

Molale, famously known as Kanyo of Kanyo M Atelier fashion house, unveiled his traditional bridal collection this week. He literally pulled the rug from under his followers to show an enchanting modern African fairy-tale bridal collection.

The collection titled A solemn Ode to Love is a defining step for the youth-owned luxury brand which produces mainly high-end summer and winter ready-to-wear collections.

Kanyo M told WeekendLife on Wednesday that the collection was conceptualized during the pandemic.

The collection carries a solemn mood cognizant of the intimate African weddings during this period. African weddings are known to be culturally flamboyant occasions often spanning months or weeks, said Kanyo.

The Creative Director of the self-titled house says he was conceptualizing each of the looks in the collection, after he revisited initial ideas of what English wedding regalia represented and how it was carried into influential African settings such as royalty and politics.

You cannot deny the influence was quite great on many African cultures. When deconstructing the ideas of wedding regalia, I didnt want to completely annihilate the concept of the white wedding gown because I believe up until this point its those ideas that have had a bearing on how our traditions and culture have evolved. Completely omitting that truth would be painting an untruthful picture about what I deem would be an African wedding gown, he said in an exclusive interview with WeekendLife.

Taking a closer look at each of the gowns in the collection, they all carry the same notes of a true robe de mariee (wedding gown). However, it is also hard to miss the fact that they are entirely made from traditional German print.

The embrace of the two cultures is carried out elegantly in a sophisticated and well thought out manner that is befitting of a royal wedding. The imagery from the campaign did not leave much for the imagination either, carrying a likeness that can be seen in renaissance portraits.

Kanyo says, ordinarily when people think of bridal wear or grooms wear, they often draw ideas from traditional western customs but that, he says, should not always be the case. In my work I have received clients who want Setswana traditional gowns but do not often give the idea of a German print wedding gown a chance.

Most of the time, these gowns will serve as either a second outfit for the wedding or traditional ceremony. The modern white wedding dress often overpowers the traditional wedding gown which usually would be an afterthought, he elucidated.

Kanyo M Atelier is a youth owned fashion house established in 2017. Based in the capital city, the luxury brand was founded by Boikanyo who also oversees operations as well as the production of its seasonal collections and bespoke apparel.

Kanyo Ms design sensibility finds its identity in Botswana history and culture. The design concepts therefore intersect the rich cultural heritage of Africa and modern design to create elegant apparel for the modern African urbanite.

However, things took a turn for the worse when Pearl Thusi abruptly left the stage, leaving DJ Sway to carry on alone. Despite the unexpected setback, DJ Sway rose to the occasion and captivated the audience, effectively putting an end to the drama caused by Pearl Thusi.

Chef Gustos walk of shame

22nd November 2023

Chef Gustos, the renowned hitmaker, recently experienced what can only be described as a walk of shame at the 8th edition of the Yarona FM Music Awards (YAMAs). Despite being nominated a whopping seven times, he failed to secure a single win. Ouch!

The night was filled with surprises, drama, and controversy, but the biggest winner of the evening was Han C, who walked away with three awards, including Best Pop and Best Male Single for his hit song, “Sebinki.” Han C graciously announced that he would be donating P10,000 from his winnings to his fellow nominees, promoting a spirit of togetherness among artists. What a noble gesture!

Meanwhile, Chef Gustos found himself on the losing end of several categories, including People’s Choice Artist of the Year, which he had won in the past. He seemed unfazed by the loss, stating, “People know that ‘Away’ was big, but they won’t stop me.” It’s clear that Chef Gustos is determined to continue making music, regardless of the awards he receives.

However, he did express his frustration with the outcome, suggesting that the awards may be corrupt. He declined to comment further, citing the need to protect his brand and maintain good relationships with corporate clients. It’s understandable that he wants to avoid any potential damage to his future prospects.

In fact, Chef Gustos went so far as to request that Yarona FM not nominate him for future YAMAs. It seems he wants to distance himself from the disappointment and focus on his music without the pressure of awards. Perhaps this decision will allow him to create freely and without the burden of expectations.

While Chef Gustos may have experienced a walk of shame at the YAMAs, it’s important to remember that awards do not define an artist’s talent or success. His fans still appreciate his music, and he continues to have gigs with corporate clients. So, despite the disappointment, Chef Gustos remains optimistic about his future in the industry.

In the end, the YAMAs may have been a letdown for Chef Gustos, but he’s determined to keep moving forward. He won’t let a lack of awards dampen his spirits or hinder his creativity. And who knows, maybe next time he’ll come back stronger and prove that he’s deserving of recognition. After all, the true measure of an artist’s success lies in the hearts of their fans, not in shiny trophies.
