BFA, Amrouche to part ways

Adel Amrouche, the Senior National Team head coach, will not stay beyond October 2021 after reports emerged that Botswana Football Association (BFA) has resolved not to renew his contract.

BFA is said to have been weighed down by his reported P250 000 a month salary especially in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, this publication understands that the Office of the President (OP) has requested the local federation to provide clarity on Amrouches hyped salary. Sources close to developments divulge that the association has now sensed the governments impending concerns hence a bold step to let him go.

Amrouche was in 2019 tasked with taking the Zebras to the AFCON finals and he looks set to accomplish the goal should he beat Zimbabwe and Algeria in back to back games this month. But the news of Amrouches stupendous salary came at a time when the Senior National Team is enduring a double edge sword fight with the AFCON 2022 qualifiers and the coronavirus sombre mood.

Somewhere around and far away from Lekidi Football Centre, it is quickly turning into a live trial for both the players and the coaching staff. Amrouche signed a two year deal with BFA worth P3 million annually. At the time, the association distanced itself from information linking them with Amrouches salary. But were later steadfast in their insistency that good things do not come cheap.

Amrouche, a gaffer appointed to overhaul and turn around the fortunes of the Botswana game within two years had played back-to back games against Malawi and came out of the tie scathed. No goals, no win. But a win against Zambia last November inspired a collective belief that he might turn the corner.

However, increasinglyand predictably sothe teams head coach is expected to become the living embodiment of the monumental task ahead. So far, World Cup dreams have come and gone.
Questions are now flying from everywhere trying to scrutinize the massive disparity between his priceless treatment and his lukewarm results. Surely it can never be early.

With this in mind, many critics may feel further emboldened to ask for radical changes in high places of Botswana football. But while Amrouches job is obviously a thankless one, the associations reaction amid the coachs pay cheque is no longer with a surprising composure. They are no longer proud to defend his stay at Lekidi and they want him gone.

Without dwelling much on his salary, BFAs file and rank members used to chant that coaches were slowly becoming expensive to purchase. There is no short cut to success, if we want positive results, we have to acquire tried and experienced coaches, one member once said.
