Relationships are all about being honest and being truthful to one another. and in a case where the other partner is HIV positive, it is imperative to disclose your status to your partner.
Though it may be a mammoth task for many reasons; fear of rejection, stigmatization et cetera, it is possible for partners with different HIV status to have a happy healthy relationship, provided of course both take extra precautions especially when sexually intimate. There are many safety precautions that can help, one such medication is Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, commonly known as PrEP.
PrEP is an HIV prevention method that helps HIV-negative individuals take anti-HIV medications before coming into contact with HIV to reduce their risk of becoming infected. The medications work to prevent HIV from establishing infection inside the body.It is common for people living with HIV to find it difficult to disclose their HIV status, this could be due to various strong costs that comes with divulging that information.
As much as people need to be ready to accept such realities, the need to disclose your HIV status to your partner can never be overemphasized. HIV/AIDS remains a global pandemic and this issue needs to be treated with caution and sensitivity in order to build the next HIV/AIDS free generation. In an interview with WeekendLife, Bonolo Bosa Selaledi who is living positively with the virus, highlighted that people should know that there is nothing wrong with being in a relationship with someone who is positive.
“It allows another person to feel valued in life, there is no room for discrimination. In my case my boyfriend is negative and I am positive,” she said.
Selaledi stated that at first it was hard for her to disclose her status to her partners but eventually she had to learn to do the right thing.“Before the current guy I am with, other guys when I told them my status, they accepted but some could not. The other guy I told him after we had sex and he freaked out that he wanted to beat me. He had to go to the hospital for PrEP, so that should there be any infection then it is treated,” she said.“My current boyfriend saw through my public stories that I am positive then I confirmed with him.
So he doesn’t have any problem and he is fine with my status and he is very supportive.“We always opt for protection, especially when we are having sex. He always makes sure that I exercise, and that I eat healthy as well as getting enough rest. I go for my checkups without fail and I take my medication on time,” she said.Although people react differently when one discloses their HIV status, she said it is best to tell people on time so that they can decide what to do next before they become too attached.
“I do not blame guys who ghost me when I disclose my status, because knowing the truth can be too scary. Some find it difficult to take it in, but when given time to digest the news it could be easy on their side,” she said. She has further urged people to encourage those living with the virus to disclose their status to their partners, seeing as how HIV is not a death sentence and can be easily managed when medications are taken religiously.“It is very dangerous to date someone without knowing their status because people these days indulge themselves with different partners which put their partners at a higher risk of being infected without knowing,” she said.
HIV activist, Kabo Komanyane also shared his advice with WeekendLife; “To be honest this is a very personal issue. It is someone’s choice but the good thing is for a partner to stick around and be a support structure to the one positive, be there for them emotionally, spiritually, financially, to make sure they enroll in treatment if they are not. People are advised to use both PrEP and condoms.’’
‘‘Disclosing your status to your partner promotes safe sex, partners can also be a support system to making sure that you adhere to treatment, they can help plan for your diet, encourage you to be physically, emotionally and psychologically fit,’’ he said.

Chef Gustos, the renowned hitmaker, recently experienced what can only be described as a walk of shame at the 8th edition of the Yarona FM Music Awards (YAMAs). Despite being nominated a whopping seven times, he failed to secure a single win. Ouch!
The night was filled with surprises, drama, and controversy, but the biggest winner of the evening was Han C, who walked away with three awards, including Best Pop and Best Male Single for his hit song, “Sebinki.” Han C graciously announced that he would be donating P10,000 from his winnings to his fellow nominees, promoting a spirit of togetherness among artists. What a noble gesture!
Meanwhile, Chef Gustos found himself on the losing end of several categories, including People’s Choice Artist of the Year, which he had won in the past. He seemed unfazed by the loss, stating, “People know that ‘Away’ was big, but they won’t stop me.” It’s clear that Chef Gustos is determined to continue making music, regardless of the awards he receives.
However, he did express his frustration with the outcome, suggesting that the awards may be corrupt. He declined to comment further, citing the need to protect his brand and maintain good relationships with corporate clients. It’s understandable that he wants to avoid any potential damage to his future prospects.
In fact, Chef Gustos went so far as to request that Yarona FM not nominate him for future YAMAs. It seems he wants to distance himself from the disappointment and focus on his music without the pressure of awards. Perhaps this decision will allow him to create freely and without the burden of expectations.
While Chef Gustos may have experienced a walk of shame at the YAMAs, it’s important to remember that awards do not define an artist’s talent or success. His fans still appreciate his music, and he continues to have gigs with corporate clients. So, despite the disappointment, Chef Gustos remains optimistic about his future in the industry.
In the end, the YAMAs may have been a letdown for Chef Gustos, but he’s determined to keep moving forward. He won’t let a lack of awards dampen his spirits or hinder his creativity. And who knows, maybe next time he’ll come back stronger and prove that he’s deserving of recognition. After all, the true measure of an artist’s success lies in the hearts of their fans, not in shiny trophies.
