Galaxy fans stay Da Costa sacking

Attempts by the board and management of Jwaneng Galaxy to officially sack Portuguese born Miguel Jorge Da Costa, keep delaying as fans of the club are not happy with the decision. The management is of the view that the investment does not match the return.

Information gathered from the top hierarchy of the supporters of the Jwaneng-based club has it that the fans are not in support of the decision of the management, hence the delay in sacking him officially.

The Portuguese coach went into the dark books of Galaxy management following his reported fallout with his technical team that included his immediate assistant, Oris Radipotsane.
The management has since sent signals of sacking the award winning coach but the supporters keep kicking against the decision insisting the coach has rekindled the team spirit.Da Costa, before his appointment, was a highly motivated tactician and has succeeded in building an impressive record for Galaxy.

He won a top 8 tournament at the first time of asking and finished last season on the third spot.  This what propels supporters’ assessment of the tactician, he has re-written history at the Debswana pampered club. But a sense of impending upheaval has rarely been far from the surface at Jwaneng Galaxy during its turbulent years. Even if Manuel Da Costa has been taken aback by recent developments-that consequently lead up to his sacking- the signs are familiar to old guard of players and coaches alike.

Galaxy started the season in an uncompromising mood, winning all their first four games. This put them on pole position, but a little more than four weeks later, having claimed only three points from two matches, the team found itself looking up at Orapa United, Township Rollers and Security Systems  while Da Costa glanced nervously over his shoulder in fear of being stabbed in the back. The official word from within Jwaneng is that Da Costa has been sacked and his assistant Oris Radipotsane will take over.

The word from elsewhere — some of it trickling down from followers and advisers who are privy to management’s thoughts and mood swings — is far less reassuring; being a foreign coach in all conceivable ways has not been good enough to make Da Costa any less vulnerable than his predecessors. All the while, Galaxy is cautioned to treat issues of coaching with the seriousness it deserves. Four seasons ago, they sacked award winning coach Mike Sithole without specific reason. A season later, they appointed Serbian coach Zlatko Krmpotic but his stay was as short as a hobbit. This trend has proceeded to Da Costa.

The dents that ultimately bashed his reputation altogether, came when Galaxy fell way short in their top 8 cup challenge. The very same cup they were supposed to defend.  It is said the management failed to fathom Da Costa’s failure especially that he was knocked out by their brother in Orapa United.Da Costa has protested throughout that in leading Galaxy back to the top of the country’s game after years in the wilderness, he could have achieved all that could be expected of him. Galaxy are currently on position 4 in the BTC Premiership log following Township Rollers ascension to the top after a 4-1 drubbing of Francistown based TAFIC on Wednesday night. It remains to be seen how boardroom manoeuvres at Galaxy will affect the club’s pursuit of the league title.

Oris Radipotsane is a winner in his own right, but his victories are synonymous with clubs seeking promotion from First Division to the elite league. Could his charm manifest at Galaxy and aim for the BTC top honours? Only performance and results may answer this question.
