Chiefs on the brink of Top 8 elimination

Coach Mike Sithole’s misfiring Mochudi Centre Chiefs probably need Nigerian Prophet TB Joshua’s prayers to qualify for the next round of the Mascom Top 8 on Tuesday when they face free-scoring Nico United.

It was a wretched week for the expensively assembled team, who failed to win in two consecutive games. Their captain, Pontsho Moloi spoke less of the two performances, but he knows only a dramatic reversal of fortunes can save them now.

Questions will be asked about the happiness of the players after failing to score in Selebi-Phikwe despite creating numerous chances, raising doubts about their manager’s tactical capabilities.

Having failed to win in two games ( one in Top 8 another of in the Premier League), scoring one goal and conceding four, Chiefs suffered exactly the kind of calamitous start they were looking to avoid when Kenamile Mane gave away possession just after his introduction to accelerate Nico’s ensuing attack, in the process conceding the second goal.

Part of Phikwe stadium was stunned, while the other was in delight. Chiefs laboured for a goal but their continuous attacks exposed their makeshift defence. Pontsho Moloi tried to bring the team into the game, but to no avail. His continuing under performance in the Mascom Top 8 has become an unwanted trope of the club’s fortunes in the competition.

Sithole’s woes became apparent in the opening half through his body language. The Zambian has rocked on his heels in anguish when their ‘pensioner’ Michael Mogaladi was clear but could only blast the ball wide after a stunning Lemponye Tshireletso free-kick.

It did not get better. Chiefs’ defence has become a serious weakness of late and was targeted by Nico to good effect. It seems Sithole has been doing extra work trying to shore the rearguard up but, again, Nico were able to punch in holes at will.

On one occasion Gift Moyo raced into yards of space to leave a puffing Mogaladi playing catch-up. Their old defender struggled and Nico strikers, including the untouchable Richard Legwaila, thrived. He scored a hat-trick.

The unpalatable truth facing Chiefs is that the Kgatleng giants are continuing to resemble a rabble, living on the hope of reviving their fortunes and little else. The least expected of elite footballers is to keep on trying but it seems Sithole’s team is plugging away.

This coming week Nico will present them with a daunting task of scoring four goals. Whether that will happen, remains to be seen, but one thing for certain is that they are on the brink of elimination.
