Rugby prepares for African tournament


The Botswana national rugby sevens team will be competing in this year’s Confederation of African Rugby (CAR) sevens tournament billed for Harare, Zimbabwe from November 29th to December 1st. Preparations for the tournament started in September with the team attending two South Africa Northern Region sevens tournaments in Pretoria (Blue Bulls) and Potchefstroom .

The tournament, to be played at Harare Sports Club brings together 12 top ranked teams in Africa among them South Africa, Kenya and Namibia. With rugby sevens having been admitted to the Olympics, the tournament will be used to seed teams for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic qualifiers as well as the All Africa Games qualifiers.

Botswana is in Pool A alongside South Africa, Madagascar, Tunisia, Zambia, Tunisia and Senegal. The Botswana Rugby Union (BRU) has sought the services of top South African sevens coach Denver Wannies to work with the team in preparations for the tournament. He will be arriving in Botswana on Friday November 14th and leaving on Sunday 16th.  The team is scheduled to leave for the tournament on November 26th and return on December.

USN, through Medswana has agreed to sponsor the Botswana national rugby sevens team with nutritional supplements in the lead up to the tournament and during the tournament. The team received the USN supplements this week and they are using them in their preparations. With modern, scientific developments in the game, the sponsorship has come as a major boost for the team ahead of the tournament.

Mason Greenwood attempted rape charges dropped

Charges of attempted rape and assault have been dropped against Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood who was arrested in January 2022 after the allegations emerged.

The 21-year-old was arrested in January last year amid allegations surrounding images and videos that emerged online.

He was later charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The Crown Prosecution Service said the charges were discontinued after a key witness withdrew their involvement.

The Manchester United defender will now focus on his club career having made 93 caps for France, appearing at three world cups and on European championship. The Les Bleus won the World cup in 2018 and Raphael Varane started all but one of France’s matches in Qatar as they finished as runners up to Argentina

Finally, sponsors jerk BFA

With many being of the view that the state of football in Botswana has deteriorated significantly as it is no longer appealing to the business community, this was a good week for the football community. The Botswana Football Association (BFA) leadership under the stewardship of MacLean Letshwiti secured sponsorship for a combined value of P19. 3 million for the FA Cup competition and the First Division league – both South and North.
