It is expected that champagne glasses will be clinking joyfully in celebration very soon, as local volleyball giants Kalavango Volleyball Club (KVC) 36 years of existence. This momentous occasion will include the players awards to be conducted at a gala dinner.
Kalavango was formed 36 years ago in Gaborone by among others Boyce Sebetela who also happened to play for the club. Kalavango is the second ever volleyball club to be formed locally after Kutlwano. It is said that the founder of the club formed it ‘’to give Kutlwano competition’’ and this is always evident whenever the two side meet.
Any duel between the two sides always leaves the volleyball enthusiast salivating for more. A ready example is when the two giants met last weekend in Lobatse when the two dished out scintillating game of volleyball.
In its years of survival, KVC has always proven to be a force to reckon with in the local volleyball fraternity. They have contributed immensely in the foundation of the game as their players have consistently received national team call-ups since its formation, the prolific Monica Alfred being an example.
But after so many years why do they have awards now? ‘’The reason for doing this now is for the current players to know the former players and share the culture of the team and for the players to get fruits of their toil,’’ the Borolong born Alfred, who is the marketing manager for the event told WeekendSport.
Gaborone United is one of the teams that have been awarding players annually in their gala dinner and early this year softball team Dinare also hosted a gala dinner as part of their celebration of many years of existence and they went on to win the Selibe Phikwe extravaganza.
Currently, Kalavango women’s team is in position three in the Mascom league log and in their merrymaking weekend, they will face Dynamites before finishing their season with their rivals, Mafolofolo. Should they win the two games they are likely to finish in second position behind Kutlwano. Their men’s side however, is still struggling occupying the 7th spot in the log in the men category.
The event will be graced by the BNSC Chairperson Solly Reikeletseng as the guest speaker, and at a time of going to print the organisers were running helter-skelter to secure an athlete who could give words of encouragement to fellow sportsmen.
