Gaborone United (GU) has provided further evidence that Tebogo Sembowa’s future lies somewhere else by handing their new talisman and Namibian import Benson Shilongo a good deal after showing an impressive start this season.
The move effectively dismisses Sembowa’s chances of continuing to excel at the Reds after encountering a heavy fallout with the team management at the beginning of the season.
Sembowa was suspended pending investigations into alleged ill discipline but was expected to return when both Jackie Mothathego and Mandla Mgadla were reinstated.
United long-standing striker has admitted it was "embarrassing" to be sidelined from the squad but has vowed to stay and fight for his place.
But Sembowa, who has been a marvel to watch, would be one of the many strikers in GU's squad that has come and gone – a collection that includes Makundika Sakala, Dillion Shivandere, Sageby Sandaka, Jomo Moatlhaping and Shilongo – and with the possibility of another forward joining this summer, the developments are ominous for Sembowa's future.
The former Ecco City Greens star scored a couple of goals in all competitions this season and has been a reliable source ever since. The striker finished as the Premier League's third leading goal-scorer, yet he was unable to convince GU of his worth on the biggest stage.
"It was embarrassing for me that my suspension was not lifted and I was not included in the group," Sembowa was quoted as saying.
Sembowa’s contract expires in 2015 and United have yet to decide whether to extend the deal by 12 months.
The striker said: "I will remain at United. I will fight for my place and I will fight for title. If I were a man who gave up easily, I would never be here in the first place. Starting next year, everything begins all over again – my personal fight to be in the first team, and for United to win more titles."
Recruiting and handing Shilongo a two-year contract may have caused s stir, but the Namibian international is on the brink of a heavily incentivised contract. He also offers experience and cutting edge to Rahman Gumbo and GU following the team’s slow start to this campaign.
The Namibian international, who is also a friend to Rollers’ striker Jerome Louis, is expected to relieve Ronald Chikomo of the load of scoring the goals for the club.
United’s communication manager Kabelo Brown declined to share information with this publication, saying the team “is to meet with Sembowa soon after a roadmap is to drawn up”.
