Rollers eye GU’s Shilongo

The defending champions and current pacesetters, Township Rollers are reported to be planning to lure in Gaborone United’s (GU) Namibian striker, Benson Shilongo in a bid to strengthen their side ahead of the hectic 2015 schedule.

This publication has established that the 22 year-old goal poacher has been on the want-list of Mapalastina ever since he came to Botswana. However, characteristically, the team has remained cagey on whether they are targeting him this season or not. ‘’We are still awaiting the coach to give us his recommendations on what should be added to the squad and that’s when we will reveal our targets,’’ Rollers spokesperson Phempheretlhe Pheto said.

Reports have been flying thick and fast that Popa’s top marksman Jerome Louis will be leaving for trials to an un-named Slovakian Super Liga side, something which is said to have coerced the management to seriously consider Shilongo as his replacement should Louis succeed. This however has been rubbished by Pheto saying ‘’there is no truth on those reports.’’

Popa Popa will this year compete in three cups being the Premier League, Mascom Top 8 and the exhausting continental Champions league where they have been pitted against South African side Kaizer Chiefs in their first match. Rollers is currently at the summit of the premier league log and they also want to walk away with the lucrative Top 8 cup which they lost last year to BDF XI.

For CAF, the team will have to represent this country well, this means they will need to beef up their squad seriously if they want to conquer in all the competitions.

The club is expected to sign former Cape Town Santos forward Jerome Ramatlhakwane during this transfer window to help them in the continental games, looking at the experience he poses from the national team. But those close to the team continue to maintain that the team seriously considers Shilongo as they are aiming to have at least three outright strikers. However, it appears they won’t get him easily as he still has a running contract with the Reds, but with the business mogul, Jack Dish Sha’a and the tricky Somerset Gobuiwang at the helm, everything is possible.

Shilongo, a compatriot and friend to Rollers’ Louis who is said to have been groomed well from an academy and has settled well in the Botswana set-up. He has become a darling of football fans locally. He is a striker who can take the defender on. His wizardry skills give defenders sleepless nights and could also be used as a holding striker but his mobility speaks wonders for him. With his unpopular hair style, he has so far performed satisfactorily something which makes him one of the best strikers in the league.

Meanwhile in other transfer news, former BDF XI midfielder Patrick Motsepe has moved to Orapa United. BR Highlanders have acquired the services of striker Emmanuel ‘Petit’ Thakadu who had a quite stint at Nico United. The newly appointed Nico United Coach, Wesley Mondo is reported to be arriving with a Zimbabwean striker to curb the frontline deficiency at the club. Jwaneng Galaxy are said to be eyeing the BMC duo of Kenanao Kgetholetsile and Tshepo Motlhabankwe, while Uniao Flamingo Santos have acquired Mpho Kgaswane from GU on a loan move.
