Maun marathon set for July

History has shown that Maun is a top  hosts of  some of successful events in Botswana, now on the playcards is hosting the maiden instalment of the Maun Marathon schedulled for July 2015.

Maun marathon comes exactly 100 years after the establishment of Maun hence it will form part of the festivities celebrating 100 years of existence  of modern day Maun.

Ngamiland Council of Non-Governmental Organizations (NCONGO) who are organizers of the event through this project aim mainly to raise funds for charity.

“Our focus this year will be on assisting the elderly and orphans. We have realized the need for an old age day care centre in Botswana and we intend to raise funds through the proceeds of the marathon to construct an Old Age Centre in Maun, the first ever in Botswana,” say NCONGO officials.

The marathon in addition also aims to promote sports tourism in Maun and to continually brand Botswana as a tourism destination of choice by providing diversity.  NCONGO believes that Maun as a tourism hub, boasts of Okavango Delta, Tsodilo Hills, Lake Ngami, Thamalakane River and other rich attractions of tourists, it remains appropriate to start holding an event of this magnitude in Maun.  

The event will be precursed by mini marathons in the Ngamiland Region with events  in Seronga, Shakawe, Gumare and Sehithwa. Runners will be drawn from these events and the grand finale will be in Maun. The event will include a 4, 10, and 21 km race,  and in these races professional athletes are expected to add up to fun runners who will partake in them. Recognising the diversity within humanity, there will also be a special race dedicated to people living with disability.   
NCONGO was established in 2008 and serves as the umbrella body of Ngamiland Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in matters related to sustainable social and economic development. The organization was set up to coordinate the efforts and raise the profile of the needs of NGOs in Ngamiland, to assist in capacity building of member organizations and to facilitate networking and communication within the region.

Over the past 5 years NCONGO is reported to have implemented projects that have touched peoples’ lives and transformed the NGO community in Ngamiland into some of the most successful entities in terms of governance and project management.

Mason Greenwood attempted rape charges dropped

Charges of attempted rape and assault have been dropped against Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood who was arrested in January 2022 after the allegations emerged.

The 21-year-old was arrested in January last year amid allegations surrounding images and videos that emerged online.

He was later charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The Crown Prosecution Service said the charges were discontinued after a key witness withdrew their involvement.

Raphael Varane announces retirement from international football after 10 years of service.

The Manchester United defender will now focus on his club career having made 93 caps for France, appearing at three world cups and on European championship. The Les Bleus won the World cup in 2018 and Raphael Varane started all but one of France’s matches in Qatar as they finished as runners up to Argentina

Finally, sponsors jerk BFA

30th January 2023

With many being of the view that the state of football in Botswana has deteriorated significantly as it is no longer appealing to the business community, this was a good week for the football community. The Botswana Football Association (BFA) leadership under the stewardship of MacLean Letshwiti secured sponsorship for a combined value of P19. 3 million for the FA Cup competition and the First Division league – both South and North.
