Will Letlapeng survive the chop?

Lurching from the sublime to the atrocious, “Rock of Ages” has been anything but dull.  But one last surprise is not out of the question especially when the team takes on relegation candidates BR Highlanders and Ecco City Greens, writes WEEKENDPOST SPORT REPORTER Mosimanegape Tshoswane.

With the league coming to an end, it remains to be seen if rookie Letlapeng would survive the relegation quagmire.

That they started battling relegation exactly at the beginning of the league is subject for another day. But having however failed to off-load pressure against log leaders Chiefs, it has become apparent that the Ramotswa side is going into the last 8 games of the season with a slim chance of survival.

Letlapeng, fresh from Debswana first division, have changed administrators, changed coaches, and changed the bulk of the team. They have never bought, but resorted to nurturing young talent and this might have been their downfall. Their budget cannot be scrutinized but it is a fact they have lost hordes of followers. With all this coming to light, it is easy to surmise that the team is slowly fading away in the premier league.

They have played better on the first round of the season though with annoying mixed results, at the pricier end – be in form of fee defender Patrick Mathaba managed a couple of good games in the first round, then faded bafflingly; Coach Nthaga finally provoked boos from his home crowd before heading for a exit door while striker Chimuku remains equal parts- hero and villain due to his inability to convert clear –cut chances.

The team currently is perched on the 16th spot, with 12 points and 5 points behind ECCO who forced a draw against Police XI on their previous game.

However, few at the team, or anywhere else, are still giving the team much hope of survival after they saw their game with Center Chiefs been rescheduled due to heavy pours. They undeniably put up a spirited performance more especially after beating Extension Gunners 1-0 in a fort night.

But again ,at this  point and given the way the team is playing, it is possible to look down the fixture list and predict, without  seeming too outlandish, that Letlapeng might pick up only a point in their 8 remaining games. The way they had been playing certainly offered no clue that they might somehow salvage hope from a run-in that would have given a title-challenger pause, let alone a team facing relegation.

The turning point – the moment that will spark the revival that will give the Rock OF Ages unforeseen hope of avoiding the drop – will surely come Notwane game. They will have to confront their ‘relegation mates’ Ecco City Greens and Nico United before rounding it off with the equally struggling Mahalapye outfit BR Highlanders. The other games are against dangerous Sankoyo Bush Bucks, Rollers and BDF XI-but if all won, will swing the pendulum back to Nico United who are currently safe to respond.

If anything has been learned at the Ramotswa outfit this season, by fans and staff alike, it is that players will defy expectations. Too many of the supposed new stars have been anything but or have revealed devastating temperament flaws (and rumours from well-placed sources suggest growing resentment among the old guard of players about the new mix of money and arrogance in the dressing room).

Everyone expects Letlapeng to lose against the resilient  Chiefs or Rollers but for them to be wiped out by new entrants will surely pave their way to first division with a games against BDF XI and BMC carrying less significance.
