Botswana music lovers could no longer have to cross borders into South Africa for a music treat, as things stand. Local music promoters have upped their game and the recent music shows are testament to that.
Gaborone is being transformed into a music city, and it looks like jazz has owned the fight. There has been a recovery of shows in the city owing to the genre.
In a space of two months Gaborone would have hosted these legendary stars; Hugh Masekela, Don Laka, Stimela, Tsepo Tshola, Jimmy Dludlu, Mango Groove, Lady Smith Black Mambazo, Mahotela Queens, Zonke, Atjazz, Louis Mhlanga, together with local Afro soul artists, Puna Gabasiane, Shanti Lo, Banjo Mosele, Lister Boleseng, Socca Moruakgomo, Nnunu Ramogotsi, Mpho Sebina and Trans Kalahari Jazz Quintet.
Music fans have seen few ambitious jazz festivals that promised to be annual events coming up in Gaborone. There was the second Hamptons Jazz Festival that rocked at Duma FM Grounds followed by the initial Gaborone International Jazz Festival (GIJF) at Serokolwane Farms, dubbed ‘Jazz on the Lawn’.
The past weekend the old Kalahari trumpeter and world-renowned musical icon Bra Hugh Masekala was blowing his horn at the Botswana Craft with Socca Moruakgomo. The ‘I am Legend’ Concert at the striking Molapo Piazza featuring endowed South African pianist Don Laka, and the globetrotting acapella trio, The Soil with Vusi Nova, Lizibo and Mmaphala is to follow.
They have an enormous fan base in Botswana and the expectation for their return is overwhelming to soul, jazz and afro-pop lovers alike. Event coordinator Thabo Letshwiti says the concert is a platform for harnessing great music from the old school and passing the baton to the new school of musicians. “Notice the cross-generational artist selection in our lineup.
This is an appreciation of new age artists inspired to play live music and an opportunity to share a stage with the icons and the eventuality of them becoming legends in the process,” Letshwiti says.
Whether it is by chance or not, one thing is clear, live music is being revived in the city, despite the liquor regulations that have stifled entertainment. The Molapo Piazza occasion will too bring diverse team of musicians to the on 29 May, for P200 (standard) and P300 (Golden Circle), you too can join the jazz lovers and music fanatics alike and keep the music spark alight in the city.
In May 2014, controversial pint sized musician, Odirile Sento married his longtime girlfriend, Kagiso Sento in a glamorous wedding, not knowing that eight years later, the two will be fighting until the very end of their holy union.
Mental health is one critical element in someone’s life but gloomily, it is often overlooked. Topics centered on mental health and depression dominate the public discourse. The national conversation surrounding mental wellness, both online and offline has aided in the stigma of suffering from depression being removed, slowly but surely.
