The Art of Ama Ata Aidoo premieres in New York this month
Local actor Donald Molosi continues to expand his resume in the creative industry and as an actor of repute. His talent has since seen him transverse the world and sharing the stage with the world’s renowned actors. This month, a film he featured in, called The Art of Ama Ata Aidoo is being premiered in New York City, United States.
About a month ago Molosi made history when he gave one of his best ever performances during the Maitisong Festival when he performed his play “Today is Me” with South African Donn Swaby and another local Kgomosto Tshwenyego. The play is based on the true story of the legendary Ugandan musician Philly Lutaaya, whose soulful Afro Pop rhythms united a generation of Ugandans. He has been performing the play off Broadway as a one man show.
The Art of Ama Ata Aidoo explores the artistic contribution of one of Africa’s foremost women writers. Director Badoe charts Aidoo’s creative journey over seven decades, from colonial Ghana, through the tumultuous era of independence, to a more sober present day Africa. Molosi filmed his part in the play in 2013 and plays a very critical role in the 78 minute film which was shot in Ghana and filmed in English.
According to Africavenir, the film charts Ama Ata Aidoo’s creative journey in a life that spans 7 decades from colonial Ghana through the tumultuous era of independence to a more sober present day Africa where nurturing women’s creative talent remains as hard as ever.
Over the course of a year the film follows Aidoo as she returns home to her ancestral village in the Central Region of Ghana, launches her latest collection of short stories in Accra, and travels to the University of California, Santa Barbara to attend the premier of her seminal play about the slave trade, Anowa.
The director Yaba Badoe is a Ghanaian-British documentary filmmaker, producer and writer. A graduate of King’s College Cambridge, she worked as a civil servant in Ghana before becoming a General Trainee with the BBC. She has taught in Spain and Jamaica and has worked as a producer and director making documentaries for the main terrestrial channels in Britain and the University of Ghana in Accra.
In May 2014, controversial pint sized musician, Odirile Sento married his longtime girlfriend, Kagiso Sento in a glamorous wedding, not knowing that eight years later, the two will be fighting until the very end of their holy union.
Mental health is one critical element in someone’s life but gloomily, it is often overlooked. Topics centered on mental health and depression dominate the public discourse. The national conversation surrounding mental wellness, both online and offline has aided in the stigma of suffering from depression being removed, slowly but surely.
