Botswana’s first Botox treatment introduced

The Spa is the fi rst ever practice in Botswana to receive accreditation and recognition from the Ministry of Health

For those who often stare into the mirror for hours on end wondering when and how you got those wrinkles that make you look 10 years older than you really are, there is finally a solution for you. Dr Tau Dental Spa this week introduced the Botox treatment. The Spa is the first ever practice in Botswana to receive accreditation and recognition from the Ministry of Health for the use of the medical procedure.

A protein produced by Clostridium Botulinium Bacteria, Botulinium Toxin A, commercially known as Botox, is injected into specific muscles to relax the contraction response of the muscles by temporarily blocking certain nerve impulses which smoothens the skin.

Although made popular by celebrities in search of a youthful look without having to endure the processes of a full on cosmetic surgery, Botox is also used to alleviate medical conditions brought about by the contracting of certain muscles.

Once injected, Botox can relax muscles for a period of up to four months. Such conditions include among others; Excessive sweating in the armpits; uncontrolled twitching of the eyelids; grinding of teeth; migraines; and spasm of bladder muscle.

“Botox injections are non-surgical treatments and they are effective for preventing and reducing wrinkles on the face. Furthermore, this cosmetic treatment has been approved by the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) as a safe procedure. There are ample misconceptions about Botox, such as Botox injections being a painful experience. On the contrary, an injection of Botox is ordinarily quite painless. The needle that is used to administer Botox is very small, in fact, it is the same size needle used every day by diabetics to administer insulin. Another popular misconception is Botox distorts one’s facial expression, however, the resultant expression on a patient’s face is dependent on the skill of the practitioner and has little to do with the Botox,” said dentist and owner of Dr Tau Dental Spa, Dr Tau who spoke  during the official launch of the treatment.

Dr Tau who will also be administering the Botox treatment to patients, studied Aesthetics Dentistry after he developed an interest in cosmetics and worked in numerous reputable dentistry before setting up his own practice. Although initially a procedure reserved for those of a certain age, Dr Tau indicated that times have changed. He said that the age of Botox users is currently as low as 19 years, and that this might have something to do with the fact that with early use, Botox may prevent one from ever getting wrinkles.

Since its introduction a month ago, the Botox treatment has been provided to 10 Batswana, with lots more showing interest to get the treatment done in future. Doctor Tau Dental Spa which has been operating in the Botswana community for over 14 years, will focus on educating Batswana on the use and advantages of Botox with the aim to equip both existing and potential patients with the knowledge to make correct and informed decisions.

So if you are looking to iron out those wrinkles which are a result of many years of laughter, squinting or that frown you thought was cute as a teen, it is worth your while to look into what Botox can do for you in order to get back that youthful look. Those with muscular medical conditions may also have finally found the relief they have been in search of. As with all medical procedures, we encourage you to look into both the advantages and disadvantages of the treatment beforehand.
