Local Rock band donates to charity

Overthrust Rock band

Overthrust Rock band, through proceeds from their Winter Mania Fest this week handed over clothing worth P3000 to the Social Welfare office in Gantsi for Itekeng Junior School student, Tshomarelo Mosaka.

The “OVERTHRUST WINTER METAL MANIA FEST” was started by Overthrust Rock Band in May 2010. It was initially started as an ordinary annual rock festival, its main purpose was to bring all followers of rock music in one place to associate, unite and re-unite and have all local rock bands performing.

The festival was initially called “Kgalagadi Desert Festival” but upon realizing that the name was similar to another brand, it was changed in 2011 to “Overthrust Winter Metal Mania Fest” deriving from the organisers’ band name and that it was staged in winter. The festival is an annual National charity Rock Music Festival held in winter either end of May or first week of June every year.

It usually attracts various Rock Music Bands from all corners of Botswana and recently, bands from outside are taking part in it e.g. Within Madness from Windhoek-Namibia, Bleeding Spawn South Africa etc.

In the year 2015, June the event was extended to Maun and titled: Overthrust Winter Mania Abolition Metal Fest, this is a mini-show or some kind of tour done on the immediate weekend after the major winter mania show, officially closing the annual Overthrust winter metal mania fest. The mini-event will spread to other places as time goes on and not only in Maun.

Every year after the fest, a date is set for handing over of donations to the beneficiary. The handing over is sometimes done during the festival, with custodians, village authorities or elders to witness the handing over.  In June, 2012 they donated clothes, toiletry and blankets all worth P 2000, in 2013 children’s clothes worth P 1700 were donated. In 2014 they donated clothes including blankets all worth P 1500.

This event is becoming popular and bigger each year even though Overthrust say their pleas for sponsors have fallen on deaf ears. They have however resorted to digging from their own pockets to contribute to the activities of the event. They will not be deterred by the lack of sponsorship from attaining their mission of helping the needy and orphans in the community.
