GU top players to be axed

At least four seasoned players will be axed from Gaborone United at the end of the season with reports that their contracts will not be renewed. The team is reportedly looking to slash its wage bill and players deemed surplus to requirement will be let go.

The defensive midfielder Alphonse Modisaotsile, winger Edwin Olerile and defender Gaopatwe Seosenyeng –all having captained the side at different periods- are alleged to be now in the team’s “unwanted list’.  The fourth player the team wants to dispose off is said to be midfielder, Ntesang Simanyana.

Reports suggest that the players’ contracts are yet to be renewed although they are reportedly left with only 5 months. It appears the newly recruited Argentinean coach Rudolph Zapata sees nothing interesting with their quality. But there are reports that it is the teams’ management decision to start overhauling the squad that is ageing.

The move could set in motion a frenzy at the side, as the team is still struggling to win a premier league title since the arrival of Nicholas Zakhem as club financier.  The team recently lost darling player, Ofentse Nato to cross-town rivals Township Rollers.

However, Mothusi Thapelo, GU team manager said some of the mentioned players have new contracts while others will have their contracts expire in June. He stated that both

‘You should remember that a coach needs to assess players before he makes decisions on who is going and who is staying. It is not true with the case of Simanyana and Olerile as both have been given new contracts.’’

Mothusi further said Simanyana was offered a new contract in December of last year and Olerile has a running contract that does not expire until 2019. He however observed that indeed Modisaotsile and Seosenyeng’s contracts near expiry date and no talks have officially begun as yet.

Gaborone United is still blowing hot and cold in the premier league having stuttered out of the ongoing Mascom top 8 competition. The newly appointed coach is still drilling the squad that would never participate in CAF confederations cup after pulling out owing to financial difficulties.

The team occupies the 6th spot with 33 points. They have won only 9 and lost 7 games. In reality, Moyagolele as they are affectionately known are in danger of finishing the season trophyless- again.
