Sebego courts lieutenants

BFA President Tebogo Sebego

Botswana Football Association (BFA) flamboyant President Tebogo Sebego’s effort of avoiding militancy and back-stabbing within his stubborn NEC is slowly becoming key in fixing the already broken relationship as difficult times continue to gnaw at them.

Prominent and former members of the BFA- whose names are beholden to the board are courted to bring stability as July elections come to sight.

The former BFA legal adviser has reportedly cajoled embattled Tariq Babitseng to support him to retain the association’s Presidency. Babitseng is the former Vice President –administration who was expelled after crude allegations of maladministration were leveled against him. He was a trusted foot-soldier when Sebego, under the friends of football banner, toppled wrestled David Fani from football power.

The diplomatic move has already ruffled a few feathers within the confused camp with some branding the President a ‘turn coat’.  Also cajoled is current BFA Vice President-admin Basadi Akoonyatse who once experienced a fall-out with the head after the 2012 elections. The President is believed to be positioning himself for a tactical campaign whilst former football friend Segolame Ramotlhwa is poised to mount a serious challenge.

While it is noted that winning the heart of the regions automatically wins a candidate the post, the spade work is thus under-way.  Highly influential regional member, although having announced his resignation from Tswapong chairmanship, Fobby Radipotsane is believed to be preparing himself to canvass massive support for the President. As one of the most experienced man of the game, Radipotsane knows all the scripts needed to win elections. He is a well-known bonafide friend of Tebogo Sebego.

With Tariq resurfacing from the dust, Sebego dares to condemn Ramotlhwa, who to this point is mum about his intentions to stand. In Babitseng, observers also say that, the President is fielding a master of the game. It is recalled that the controversial Babitseng hammered Ramotlhwa when no one was expecting in the contest of Vice President-administration. This was the case because Babitseng’s name was dragged in muddy places regarding unaccounted finances of the association.

‘I do not think that’s an issue for now, what is important is that we should all strive to improve relations and future of this football body,’’ Sebego said when reached for comment regarding the insinuations.

Babitseng himself denied any information linking him with BFA posts and Sebego and said he had “never received any call from Sebego and all I know is that I am on the sidelines’’.

Babitseng was suspended for failing to account twice when on duty. The first instance, he managed to maneuver the football terrain when summoned. However, the second time, the web finally caught him and the President was served with regrets and would be faced with tough decisions to make. He was eventually dumped in silence with the President failing to look him in the eye.
