The annual Kabelano charity cup spectacle is shrouded in a cloud of doubt amid speculation that this year’s edition is likely not be staged owing to a series of events having gone on the downward terrain in the football fraternity.
Despite some reports that the tournament will be held in Francistown stadium for the first time, WeekendSport has it on good authority that lack of sponsorship, dishonesty to charity and football politics in the run towards the Botswana Football Association (BFA) elections are some of the identified potential obstacles in staging the 13th edition.
Past sponsors of the tourney, this publication has learnt, have always scored big at the end of the tournament but with the charity trust always being left with almost nothing. Last year, sources revealed to this publication that the trust received less that P10 000, although the stadium during the event was fully packed. The gate takings for the Township Rollers game against the South African Kaizer Chiefs, was a whooping P1. 6 Million.
In the last three years the tournament featuring four teams has been powered by Barclays Bank. Before the bank came to the picture, two cell phone net work giants, Orange Botswana and Mascom wireless have also sponsored the one day tournament.
The tournament has always been a subject of debate. Before Barclays Bank showed interest, participating teams were reluctant to honour the games citing lack of motivation as their concern.
At one point, the Premier League scuffled with the Association when the latter stalled in releasing teams for participation. It was also argued that the winner of the premier league title, the winner of the domestic cup (in this case Mascom top 8) coupled with winners of both First divisions North and South should unite to form the tournament. However, the idea was never to see the light of the day due to brawling by individuals holding plum posts.
BFA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kitso Kemoeng when fielding this publication enquiry said, ‘‘as far as the association knows, the agreement between us and the kabelano trust has elapsed and that is all.’’

Athletics is one of the sporting activities that for many years has been consistently performing extremely well in international competitions. One of the reasons is the availability of qualified and experienced coaches, who have been working tirelessly on the ground to ensure that they scout talent and develop more athletes.
For the first time after eons, football clubs plying their trade in the elite league are walking in the shadow of the undefined with nothing concrete agreed and on sight before the commencement of the football season.
