Petty sports politics and ego are said to have been the determining factors in awarding the Sportsman of the Year accolade at the 36th Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) awards last weekend which saw boxer, Zibani Chikanda claim the award ahead of endeared runner, Isaac Makwala.
Various sources including coaches and sports pundits poured scorn on the system of awarding as they spoke unanimously that the Tutume born Makwala was more deserving than the Mathangwane born boxer. Along Makwala and Chikanda, karateka, Ofentse Bakwadi was also nominated for the same award.
A Facebook post from last year by Makwala where he expressed his discontent with his omission in nominees is rumoured to have cost him.
“These guys don’t want outspoken people, if you lambast them publicly they will deal with you and while Makwala was a deserving athlete, the powers that be wanted to teach him a lesson,” said a coach who didn’t want to be named.
“Fanne ke bone that list ya nominees before the world relays, ne ke sa ye go itshwenya ke ngakalla ke re ke direla Botswana waitse.” (If I had seen the BNSC awards nominees before the world relays I would have not bothered working hard thinking i wasdoing it for my country). These were the utterances from the 400m Tutume born runner Makwala after being omitted from last year’s awards, which is said to have cost him the award this year.
Among the competitions that Makwala participated in, is the Diamond League, he finished 5th on the finals of the World Championships, notched gold at the All Africa Games (AAG) while again being the fastest wheel in the 4×4 relay team that qualified for the Olympics. These were seen as the necessary efforts to give Makwala the award, more so he was pivotal in the relay team looking at the times he split in 4×4 events.
In his glorious 2015, Makwala ran 43:72 to reclaim his African title as a record holder even though he was dethroned days later by South African’s Wayde Van Niekerk at the world champions. This time also made him the world leading for a short stint. Further solidifying his stand he displayed sparkling performance at the world championships where the hopes of Batswana rested on his shoulders at the World Championship despite finishing fifth in the final.
“I think they just wanted to balance things because it seemed athletics dominated the event hence they opted for the boxer but honestly speaking, I believe Makwala deserved the award,” Coach Chilume Ntshwarang said.
“Disappointment is an understatement and to be honest I don’t understand these awards, maybe if they can use point system because events weight vary, and if you look at athletics events you can compete at the world champs then you are pitted with someone who only featured in continental events, which is which,” BAA’s Glody Dube asked rhetorically.
Chikanda who is Phikwe’s EMG boxer, won gold at the All Africa Games, gold in Zone four and another gold at the national championships.
“This will demoralize the runner going forward especially going into the Olympics, but again it could motivate him to feed his enemies humble pie,” one sports administrator cum commentator said.
This is the second time Makwala is left out of the picture. Last year he was not even in the nominees’ list despite his superlative performance in 2014 and this instigated social media outburst. The runner is currently in Durban, South Africa representing this nation at the Africa Senior Championships.
