LEGABIBO moves to block anti-gay US pastor

The Lesbian, Gays and Bisexuals of Botswana (LEGABIBO) together with Botswana Network on Ethics, Laws and HIV and Aids have taken a pre-emptive strike at two alleged homophobic American pastors who intend to set up church in the country.

LEGABIBO intends to block Pastor Steven Anderson and his protégé, Garret Kirchway’s bid to launch a ministry in Botswana this month by way of a petition.

Anderson leads The Faithful Word Baptist Church which originates in the American state of Arizona.

Earlier this year, Anderson, praised the gunning down of 50 gay people in an Orlando, Florida gay night club, a few hours after the occurrence stating: “the good news is that there is 50 less paedophiles in this world because these homosexuals are a bunch of disgusting perverts and paedophiles… but the bad news is that this is now going to be used; I’m sure to push for gun control where law abiding normal Americans are not going to be allowed to have guns for self-defence and I’m sure that this is going to be used to push for the so called hate speech.”

He further stated that while he does not believe in vigilantism and would not take the law into his own hands the gays should have been killed through proper channels and executed by a righteous government through trials, convictions and executions.

Anderson and Kirchway intend to launch their ministry on the 25th of September and thereafter set up church in the capital. The duo is one of a few, if any, of western clergymen in recent times to make a push into the turf of otherwise popular, self-styled and ostentatious African prophets.

In one of his sermons uploaded to online platforms, Anderson could be heard grumbling about mainstream churches’ liberalized take on women’s rights.

Speaking of women, he stated that it’s quoted in the bible that: “they should be keepers at home… they should be obedient to their husbands.”

The ultraconservative clergyman further stated that in his opinion those who advocate for women’s rights actually mean: “the right to divorce your husband, the right to rebel and disobey your husband, the right to go out, get a job and make your own money, the right to tell him what to do and the right to vote for our leaders as if women should have any say on how our country is run.”

To justify himself he said that even John Adams, one of the key crafters of the United States of America and its system of governance, equated the gifting of universal suffrage to women to being under the tyranny of England.

Anderson started giving out sermons at the age of 17.The pastor is also anti-birth control and by 2012 he had seven children, six of whom were born at home both because he is also against the idea of males doing midwifery and gynaecology work.

He further describes as ‘illegitimate and unbiblical’ for expectant women to be assisted by men.

“He is a man and she is a woman and it is not right for him to be looking at a bunch of naked women all day, “Anderson blabbered in one of his sermons.

The puritanical pastor also continued: “If a woman walks up to me and wants to give me a hug, I just put out my hand and just shake hands because I don’t want to embrace a woman that’s not my wife.”

In his other sermons he further equates the use of contraceptives to silent abortion describing it as unbiblical.

“If you are taking birth control pills you are inadvertently literally killing your children.”

He also at one point describes atheists as worshipers of Satan who love death.

In his countless teachings the pastor also tears ruthlessly into venerated civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr describing him as a “wicked, perverted, evil, false prophet.”

In a statement released on Wednesday, LEGABIBO stated that: “the pastor has no respect for humanity and his messages go against our democratic ideals that promote Botho, peace, respect for humanity, protection from discrimination and inhumane treatment.”

It further goes on to say that: “Pastor Anderson’s messages attack and demean women, seeing women as second class citizens, unequal to men, discrediting them as holistic beings who are workers, academics and leaders.” It goes on to say that: “the pastor refers to women as “home keepers and not office keepers” and sees women who work as having loose morals. These assertions erase the achievements made by women in Botswana over the years.”

The homosexual rights organisation also said that by calling for the killing of gay people pastor Anderson’s messages are homophobic and condone violence against fellow human beings and a group that is already marginalized.

“We specifically call upon the Church leadership to firmly condemn religious fanatics who use the bible as a weapon to kill, spread hatred and oppress women,” stated LEGABIBO.
