My Maun Experience revamped

Having started in 2012, this year the most celebrated festive season fiesta; My Maun Experience will be celebrating 5 years of existence.  Preparations are reportedly underway to rejoice the notable ambience and the comfort that is the Ngamiland District. Established with the endevour of promoting sport tourism and promoting Maun as a tourist destination, the event has grown over the years and lived up to its expectations.

Every year during the festive season, all roads lead to Maun for a festive break that is second to none. The tourists’ destination town becomes lit with almost all loca celebrity faces and some international acts coming for a festive break. For the past five years, Maun has seen a tremendous growth in terms of people coming in and the vibrancy has never stopped.

My Maun Experience strategy is to woo visitors, especially the youth, to Maun through a series of events and to take advantage of coincidental complimentary events that are organized by other promoters. They organize tourism activities such as Boat Cruising, Horseback safaris, Camel Riding, game drives, Mokoro trips, helicopter rides and scenic flights for the visitors, once they are in Maun.

While talking to WeekendLife this week, one of the event organisers, Dose Mosimanyane, said this year as they celebrate 5 years, the expectations is to bring a more bigger and even better event that will go down the memory lane. A Maun born Mosimanyane is one of the brains behind the initiative and he is very passionate about it. He says currently they are still in talks with possible sponsors to try bring them on board. He promised that preparations are underway and they are calling for more sponsors to come on board and support the course.

Most of the people who visit Maun for the first time only know of the boat cruising but Mokoro ride is a lifetime experience. Mokoro is a small traditional type of canoe commonly used in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. It is propelled through the shallow waters by standing in the stern and pushing with a pole, in the same manner as punting.

Mokoro was traditionally made by digging out the trunk of a large straight tree, such as an ebony tree or Kigelia tree. Modern ones, however, are increasingly made of fibre-glass, one of the advantages of which is the preservation of more of the large endangered trees. Mokoro boats are still a practical means of transport for residents to move around and cross the Thamalakane River and fishing. The boats are very vulnerable to attack by hippopotamus, which can overturn them with ease. A two hours ride in this Mokoro is like hell and heaven; you are excited yet terrified of the risks that come along with it.

The highlight of the Experience is the ‘beach’ a place along the Thamalakane river bank. This is safe sport free of crocodiles and hippos’ where indigenous people have spotted to swim, relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Here revellers come park their cars play music while they enjoy their drinks. The beauty of this place is watching the sunset as the speed boats passes at high speed. It is a very exciting and mind relaxing experience.

My Maun Experience, the brainchild behind businessman, Bissau Gaobakwe and business partner, Dose Mosimanyane back in 2012 has since drawn attention to one of the country’s tourism hubs. The birth of this magnitude project which aligns a series of events quarterly in every year gave enormous transformation that plays a major role in appealing to the tourism sector.
