Hip hop sensation, Baanthata Mokgwathi, popularly known as Ban-T has become the latest Botswana artist to be signed to ViB mobile, a subsidiary of Virgin Brew Media, specialising in ring tones and digital music. ViB recently signed a half a million pula exclusive deal with Botswana’s leading kwaito- kwasa artist, Odirile ‘Vee’ Sento.
Ban-T has been making the right waves since he sprung to stardom with Why So Faded, a collaborative effort between him and Faded Gang. The 19 year old is currently a 6 time Yarona FM Music Award (YAMA) nominee.
Ban- T has been dominating local airwaves with his debut single Naomi. The ViB deal essentially means his music will be available on all three local Mobile Network Operators; Mascom, Orange Botswana and beMOBILE.
After the release of his hit track Why So Faded, Ban-T had to prove that he was not a hit and run artist, this lead him to release his second single, Naomi which became an instant hit locally and in South Africa. The hit gets regular airtime on DSTv’s Channel O and Trace Africa.
At the recent nominee announcement of Yarona Fm Music Awards 2016, Ban- T ruled the roost, bagging six nominations with just two singles amongst them, Best Male Artist, Best Newcomer, Song of the Year (Naomi) and Artist of the year. The award ceremony will be held on December 10th 2016 at the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC). Although the YAMAs are only on their third edition, they have already made a mark as one of the most highly anticipated events of the year that celebrate music, fashion and lifestyle.
ViB previously encouraged artists to sign with them in order to make their music digitally accessible and receive royalties. Between April 2015 and February 2016, ViB Mobile awarded local artists royalties of around BW P400, 000.00.
ViB Mobile’s ringtones products and services include – Monophonic and Polyphonic Tones, True/MP3 Tones, Full Track Music and Caller Ringback Tunes (CRBT) and are distributed on all the local Mobile Network Operators (beMOBILE, Mascom Wireless and Orange Botswana).
ViB’s Chief Executive Officer, Leroy Monaheng, previously told Weekend Life that the company realised that there was a huge gap in music and that it was not making money, so they were planning on launching a comeback plan to reinvent it and have it bounce back.
He further called on any interested artists to sign with them, as long as they are popular and their music is well played. He said mobile operators approved the artists’ music as they (Mobile operators) are the ones that get to choose what kind of music they would like to be associated with their brand.
In May 2014, controversial pint sized musician, Odirile Sento married his longtime girlfriend, Kagiso Sento in a glamorous wedding, not knowing that eight years later, the two will be fighting until the very end of their holy union.
Mental health is one critical element in someone’s life but gloomily, it is often overlooked. Topics centered on mental health and depression dominate the public discourse. The national conversation surrounding mental wellness, both online and offline has aided in the stigma of suffering from depression being removed, slowly but surely.
