BFA identifies new technical director

Adjudicators tasked with interviewing and recruiting the next Botswana Football Association (BFA)’s Technical Director are said to be on the verge of starting their task and so far three possible candidates for the post have cropped up.

WeekendSport understands that the interview process is to commence soon and is expected to be completed sometimes in March. This is the case because the incumbent Technical Director, Benny Kgomela’s contract expires at the end of February.
Sources have told this publication that Kgomela is among the three shortlisted for the plum post. Former BFA Vice President (technical), Stephen Phetlhe, reportedly is also in the list. The last name completing the list is that of Matshidiso Kowa, an inductee in the hall of fame in 2015. All the three have served the association under different capacities.

All the while, it is said the association is not keen to re-employ Kgomela whose stay at Lekidi football centre excited and irked the national executive committee in equal measure. According to available information, the low-lying football administrator has been the black sheep of the association for far too long. Those close to the association authority say Kgomela’ involvement at Lekidi Football Centre was never smooth sailing.

Even at the time of his employment, the association’s National Executive Committee (NEC) was split, some complaining about sabotage while others expressed favouritism after the recruitment drive. It was recorded that Kgomela was not shortlisted for the job, but BFA failed to give clarity on how he finally got the job ahead of the three short listed candidates. Kgomela was on two separate occasions suspended by the Sebego led administration, but survived ouster plots.

With Phetlhe, the association believes he has vast experience in technical aspects of the game, having led the similar department of the association under the Sebego leadership. He is believed to be equally suited for the post. However, BFA is believed to be more rooting for Kowa. Having held a similar post that was once under Phetlhe, the association believes the credentials of Kowa are well documented. He is regarded as the Godfather of Botswana football, and even when given the post there will be little regret, if any.

Regarded as one of Botswana’s greatest goalkeepers of his time, and having been part of the National team setup, ‘Bra Tshidi,’ as Kowa is affectionately known, is one of the most revered coaches and administrators. He is also known for his good eye for talent identification and development. Among the players who have come from Kowa’s development structures is Mogakolodi Tsotso Ngele as well as his older brother Godfrey Veron Ngele, Sekhana Koko, Bakang Moeng, Thato Bolweleng, Bakang Moeng as well as Vincent Phiri among many.

The association’s greatest challenge however will be to opt for a man who can work hand in hand with BFA head coach, Peter Butler, although it is currently not clear whether the Briton will be given a contract extension.
