The Bechuanaland Session: Phase 1 set for release

The new kids on the block Wdp is a crossover Jazz duo founded by drummer, Leroy Nyoni and Kansas City Saxophonist, Terry Lewis II, who first met in a remote village in Botswana while on location playing a gig with Lister Boleseng and The Women of Jazz.

As fate would have it the two musicians started playing regular gigs for local artists till the opportunity of working on a joint solo project presented itself. The two have worked in a project titled The Bechuanaland Session: Phase 1, a Jazz fusion of Transitions, which is a collaboration between renowned local songbird Samantha Mogwe and Zeus. They have also re-made Amantle Brown’s Black Mampatile and Sereetsi and The Natives’ Robete.

The band debuted in South Africa opening for Sereetsi & the Natives' Ke Motswana Tour. Their most recent gig was the Goldies on the Eve show in Palapye on New Years’ Eve. Their first offering is a musical reflection of contemporary music done by the current inhabitants of modern day Bechuanaland.

Leroy is a multi- instrumentalist but primarily a drummer with over a decade of experience in the music circles of Southern Africa with Zimbabwean origins but having grown and honed his music skills in Botswana. He has played it all, from a short stint with Ammara Brown in Harare, Zimbabwe to an Avante Garde Jazz outfit in Cape town, South Africa to Rock gigs with Quest in Gaborone, Botswana to Gospel gigs in Zambia, he has now ventured into his newest undertaking which is this current crossover Jazz project.

Fresh off of musically directing the ‘Summer of 69 and Summer of 79’ productions, he's taken all the skills he has acquired and applied them into this 9 track album which offers nothing but pleasurable listening. His Accolades go on to different performance platforms; a great example being the successful ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour dreamcoat Stage Production’ as well as his regular stint with Botswana famed Sereetsi & the Natives having toured Europe with the Re Batswana Ensemble.

Terry Lewis is a Saxophonist hailing from the suburbs of Kansas City, Missouri. Being the son of a bassist Terry naturally gravitated towards the saxophone to complement the low end groove legacy his father was building. Having played in his local Baptist Church, Terry acquired a tone that one could associate with heaven itself. This is quite evident in his playing from his tone to his phrasing to his swag; he's the ultimate cool when it comes to Sax cool.

Having come to Botswana under the peace corps volunteer initiative he was determined to establish a music programme that would impact Botswana positively, little did he know that the vehicle for that very same cause would be this manifest project. Having spent over a year in the remote village of Sese, Botswana he has taken a keen interest in the diverse musical styles of the native people which he tries to incorporate in his playing though without a shadow of a doubt you can easily hear his musical roots. His willingness has determined his potential.

The album release period is set for mid-April this year 2017 with Pre Orders available. Information regarding album pre order and purchase can be found on www.wdpband.com or www.facebook.com/wdpbw
