Major Moves Comedy this week announced a new addition to the 5th International Heavyweight Comedy Festival (HICOFEST) line up, and another international comic, Rich Lyons from the United States will join the other comics announced late last month.
According to Major Moves Coordinator, Gaolathe Kediemetse, while they cannot afford to bring big names like Chris Rock or Kevin Hart, they bring comedians who are good enough and can guarantee the audience value for their money. “Our ultimate goal is to network with comedians we bring over and foster future relations with these comedians such that we can in future send our own to perform with them in their own countries,” said Kediemetse.
Delivering sharp, edgy and authentic stand up, Lyons is your typical American comic. His material touches on marriage, culture, politics and various life topics. He began his stand up career in 1997 performing throughout Europe as well as in his native New York. In 2009 he was runner up at the London Bridge New Comedy Fringe Festival and has since become an occasional headliner on the UK comedy circuit.
Other comics who have been added to the line-up are Tshepo ‘Masapo’ Mpiti from Lesotho. Brian Chighubu who was a hit at the 4th HICOFEST will also be back by popular demand. Local favourite, Rekunde will also perform along with Thapelo Malani who impressed in his debut at the 4th HICOFEST. Other locals include Zozo, Jerusalema, Kgafela (BW, Ouza, Roy and K-Lo. The event gives a chance to upcoming and relatively unknown comedians to showcase their wit.
Meanwhile, according to Kediemetse local comedy hit, Phenyo ‘The Master’ Phaladi will be travelling to Swaziland to feature in the inaugural Swaziland International Comedy Festival (SICF) the weekend before he goes on stage at AVANI Hotel & Casino Resort. The event is a result of Major Moves’ networking efforts.
“We want to perform in at least 5 international events a year. Phenyo is very committed and passionate about comedy, of all comedians, he is one to show up whenever I call him about marketing and publicity activities that have to be done. I call everyone else involved but they usually just stand me up and make us look bad to partners as we might arrive late or end up postponing when they don’t show up after hours of waiting,” Kediemetse revealed.
He added that his wish is for ‘The Master’ to keep attending the international events so that he can eventually go at it on his own and he can shift his focus to other promising acts. ‘The Master’ said he was looking forward to performing in Swaziland again. “The audience is very much alike that of South Africa and aren’t as tough as Batswana. The Botswana audience is really tough to please,” he said.
The 5th HICOFEST will be the biggest this year since inception as it will run over two days. And before the final show on the night of May 5, a workshop will be hosted during the day where attendance is open to all local comics. “We are hoping that the talent scouts from Finland who will be present will identify some locals during the workshop,” Kediemetse said.
He said while local comedy was struggling with corporate sponsorship, following has never been a problem. “Tickets are being bought at an impressive rate and we are anticipating another good turn-up like last year. We are sure that our followers who started with us and support the movement will continue to buy tickets and attend shows. Our hope is that corporate sponsors notice that comedy has grown in leaps and bounds and can soon jump in,” he asserted. Tickets are available at Spar outlets and Webtickets for P300 single and P500 double.
In May 2014, controversial pint sized musician, Odirile Sento married his longtime girlfriend, Kagiso Sento in a glamorous wedding, not knowing that eight years later, the two will be fighting until the very end of their holy union.
Mental health is one critical element in someone’s life but gloomily, it is often overlooked. Topics centered on mental health and depression dominate the public discourse. The national conversation surrounding mental wellness, both online and offline has aided in the stigma of suffering from depression being removed, slowly but surely.
