Rollers fails to replace Mogorosi

Township Rollers veteran player Joel Mogorosi still has a little more game time at Popa after the club failed to sign either of the two players they wanted as his replacement.

Popa are expected to re-sign Mogorosi on a one year deal after Lemogang Maswena of Orapa United together with Thero Setsile of Jwaneng Galaxy, could not be bought off their contracts by the premier league champions. The pencil slim tricky winger, Maswena, extended his stay with Mandinda Ndlovu‘s side while Setsile who made his first debut against Mauritania two weeks ago- has a running contract with Galaxy until the end of next season. These developments deterred Rollers from negotiating further, and led to them asking Mogorosi to stay at the side, although they were already certain about letting him go.

Mogorosi who has been the Vice Captain of the club is 34 years old this year. Initially, it was reported that Sharps Shooting Stars- a premier league rookie financed by former Township Rollers king pin Somerset Gobuiwang- will sign him, but Gaborone United in the last week emerged as surprise  contenders for Mogorosi, and were reported ready to scupper Sharps’ move.

However, all of this is now water under the bridge as the former Zebras captain, together with another veteran, Tshepo Motlhabankwe will remain at the club. Meanwhile, the club is attempting to reshuffle their attacking options this transfer window. Galabgwe Moyana has begun training with the team after a long layoff. There is a keen interest in signing Onkabetse Makgantai through a loan deal from DRC outfit AS Vita, sources say.

Rollers management complained last season of the lack of productivity from their strikers but they hope that Kekaetswe Moloi and other targeted signings, aided perhaps by Edwin Moalosi who remains in the books, can fire an upturn. It is clear that Mogorosi will no longer be an immediate first-choice selection but the Rollers technical team hopes that his personality and experience will serve to inspire the rest of the dressing room, most notably the younger players.

Rollers have always sought to have leaders in their squad, players who have won big games and can bolster the collective belief. Their signing of Mogogi Gabonamong two seasons ago was rooted, in part, by what he could bring away from the field. Mogorosi has won silverware with Popa and the team would not regret keeping him for motivational reasons even after he retires.
