Gaborone’s finest male to be crowned

The country’s first ever male pageant, Mister (Mr) Gaborone has returned and promises to be bigger this year. The overall winner of the pageant is expected to represent the country later this year at the 7th Mister Africa International pageant.

Mister Gaborone was first staged last year and its initial winner, Cavin Molatedi went on to represent the country at Mr Africa International where he got position three (3). The pageant was tailored to raise awareness on social issues such as safe male circumcision, sexual transmitted diseases, gender based violence and unemployment in regard to men and also to showcase the talent of Batswana through local designers, models and artistes.

In an interview with WeekendLife, The Founder of Mister Gaborone, Oratile Victor Phofhedi said that the male pageant has no strict rules and that everyone is free to join the competition. “We have no height restrictions, no body mass restriction and this pageant is open to all citizens aged between 18 and 35 years, because we are trying to empower Batswana, we cannot say we want empower Batswana and then at the same time we bring discrimination. So we might as well empower people as they are,” he said.

He added that the pageant’s main objective is to find a Motswana man who could compete at Mister Africa International and perhaps do better than the position three the contestant they sent in 2017 got. Phofhedi highlighted that a lot of people have shown support for the event and are more than willing to be part of the competition. “I already have 25 participants who have registered with Mister Gaborone. This year the pageant is showing growth because people are very much aware of it. Some from the media and also designers,” he said.

He stated that, for them coming this far is a milestone as they have attracted international offers which opened international doors for them. “Last year when I started this pageant I thought it was going to be a walk in the park, but as time went on it had international recognition with people like Khanyi Mbau recognizing us. We got four international pageantry offers then we decided to go with your last where we got position 3 at the Mister Africa International.”

Mister Gaborone is also reported to have made a name at international stages by scooping other titles. “We also got beach body award for Mister Africa International in November,” he said. Phofedi said that they are still working on finalizing details of contestants’ prizes with sponsors and partners.

“The rewards will be stipulated in the contract, we are currently discussing with those with our sponsors, but mainly what we are certain of so far is the six months gym contract, for all our top three, and the winner will go and represent Botswana at Mister Africa International amongst other African countries where we are currently at position three,” he said.

Phofhedi also said that they will engage on some charity work as it is part of their mandate. “We intend to establish a learning centre for Maboane in Kgalagadi. We want to make something like a learning centre; more like a study centre complete with computers and internet in Maboane,” he said.
