BFA overturns SORFA elections

Southern Regional Football Association (SORFA) elections held on the weekend of June 9th have been declared ‘null and void’ by Botswana Football Association (BFA) Electoral Committee following an appeal by some of the disgruntled members of the region- WeekendSport has established.
The electoral board accepted the appeal and agreed that all members of the regional association who were voted in power were not vetted prior to the elections. It has to be noted that the electoral board pointed out that one Sydney Kafeka was assessed to stand as chairman; Otukile Moruakgomo was to stand as the Vice while Thuto Keatweng was to contest for the Secretary General position. All the three were not challenged, according to BFA information.
However, the aforementioned football administrators, this publication can reveal, were not allowed to contest at the region and instead parallel delegates were brought in and chosen from the floor. Kafeka immediately lodged a complaint with the BFA electoral committee.
Kafela lost embarrassingly to Lesego Leaketsa by 14 votes to 1. However, it was only until June 19 that the electoral board deliberated on the merits of the case and concluded that the election be held again.
In their judgment the electoral board says, “The NEC is herein directed to call for a special meeting of the region to allow for conduct of elections within the ambit and spirit of BFA circular No 5, 18 and 20 of 2018.” Circular No 5 indicates that the BFA National Executive Committee has adopted a uniform format for all members desiring to serve in the BFA structures. Aspirants wishing to stand for elective positions were required to complete the necessary documents not later than 18th of April 2018.
The electoral board also noted that only aspirants whose names were released through BFA circular No 20 of 2018 be allowed to stand for positions in the regional committee. The aforesaid circular confirmed that all members who were wishing to contest for elections were assessed at a meeting held on May 22 and all other individuals who contested and won the elections’ names were not in the circular.
These developments once again point to poignant war between two warring factions of the football federation. One faction is famously associated with flamboyant famous lawyer Tebogo Sebego, who is also a former BFA president. The other group is said to be aligned with business minded Maclean Letshwiti who is also the current association’s president.
