Zakhem nears GU return

Business mogul, Nikholas Zakhem is in protracted discussions with beleaguered Gaborone United (GU) about possibilities of returning to a club he dumped almost two years ago. The club was fighting bitter identity wars that ultimately forced the Lebanese-born multi- millionaire to relinquish his services.

GU management, at the beginning of this year, declared that the club is on auto pilot and has reached a crisis stage. The development saw a lot of players exiting the club, some fighting for their welfare. According to the club constitution, the club was then placed on the hands of elders to run it. However, Zakhem is reported to be on his way back to the club he says he love the most. This week, the elders are reported to have held a series of meetings with Zakhem in an effort to turn around the club’s fortunes.

Reports say Zakhem proposes to be given almost all the control of the club for a period spanning 20 years. He wants to come again as an investor. On one hand, the elders of the club are suggesting that Zakhem be given 10 year period during which he comes only as a sponsor. According to sources, the two are at loggerheads with the duration issue and once finalized, a bold announcement will be made.

Interestingly, sources further say the GU is looking to retrace its footprints in which the club was the envy of other premier league teams as far as professionalism is concerned.  Elders who have now taken charge include one Tymon Katholo who was the club president. His committee, during the years of 2009- 13, was instrumental in bringing Zakhem at the helm of GU for the first time. Despite failing on numerous accounts to win the title championship, GU during Zakhem sponsorship, won two Mascom top 8 Cups.

The club also managed to sources million pula sponsorship by the name Mutual and Federer. Since the fall of things, the deal was never renewed, but it is highly maintained that the elders are keen on reviving this sponsorship. It is reported that close to P2.5 million were left by the Katholo committee when handing back power. P1 million was the Mascom top 8 prize money, while the other sum was from Mutual and Federer sponsorship deal that was never renegotiated.

City Senne GU’s Secretary General once told this publication that indeed Zakhem has been offered a chance to consider re-sponsoring the team. “It is very true that Zakhem still loves Gaborone United and was reconciliation is achieved, he will definitely be back, I talked to him, and he is serious about it, Senne said. It was noted that the multimillion pula business guru was still partly involved with GU where about 90% of the team players at receding in his premises. GU were last crowned premier league kings in the winter of 2009 and in between the years, they failed to replicate the same attitude and performance.
