BFA brotherhood falls apart

The Botswana Football Association’s (BFA) reform process is expected to come to a grand climax with the evaluation of two year’s concentrated efforts to clean up the image of the football mother body since the new regime took over.

It is said the association as run and administered by business guru, MacLean Letshwiti is eager to root out all administrators that are caught on the wrong side of the law. Curiously, BFA leadership founds itself battling friends who have now turned into foes.  First Division chairman Mpenzeni Sambandawe—whom BFA moles label a turnout coat is anticipated to head for the exit door after reports that he failed to account for finances circulating in his region.

The association trails the man, whom others also accuse of sleeping with BFA enemy after FIFA threatened to place the association under restricted funding category following the delay in submitting audited statutory (financial) statement. On Wednesday of this week, BFA is reported to have served the man to relinquish his duties as the chairman of the division or show cause why he should be forgiven as the regions’ accounting officer. The move is seen as a statement of intent by the association in expelling all wrong doers as reform processes stagger.

However, the reform process has been described by the anti–Letshwiti brigade as merely a means to maintain his command. They say it has not seen any acceleration in progress since his ascendancy to the throne. Letshwiti talked blithely of consultants, proposals and recommendations to turn around the statutes inside out. Instead, the first few months of work saw the game being played at the courts of law.

The association was taken aback as former premier league Secretary General fought for his integrity at the courts together with former national team assistant, Pio Paul. Amid such gruesome court cases, Lesego Leaketsa-a football administrator linked heavily with former President announced his sudden resignation, perhaps for fear of becoming entangled in the BFA’s spider web.

According to sources, some lieutenants who have broken ranks with the sitting president are now been cajoled by the former one and there is anticipation that they are teaming to wrestle BFA power out of Letshwiti’s palms. Tariq Babitseng as the chairman of Lobastse based outfit Extension Gunners is also expected to be served with a letter of suspension for allegedly having his fingers across the till at a time when Sebego was at the helm. During Sebego’s reign (in 2012-2016), Babitseng was labeled the moral voice of Sebego.

The two are also expected lobby in Police XI chairman Solomon Mantswe to solidify their voice of reason. Sources say it was not surprising when Mantswe took a side to strengthen Babitseng‘s argument to recall expelled BFA member Tshepo Mphoeng at the last BFA Annual assembly. The NEC had thrown Mphoeng out of the BFA window for her alleged predicament with President Letshwiti.

FINANCIAL MISMANAGEMENT

Even without Sebego in the picture, the association’s high ranking members were brought under the scalpel for being linked to allegations of draining the BFA coffers. Some BFA staff members fell from grace on the anguish of revelations of financial mismanagement. But the bravery of BFA administration to suspend and later expel some of their long serving members revealed the truth that the game can be protected as pressure started to mount on the hostile NEC.
