City Mayor’s marathon here

The long-awaited Gaborone city mayor’s marathon billed for 22nd September 2018 will take place next week as scheduled, the Marathon organisers have revealed.

The City Mayor and face of the Marathon, Kagiso Thutlwe told WeekendSport that the City will effectively be packed with activities and further invited many to come and witness “the mother of all Marathons” which he is hosting together with a media company-Club Media. The race is expected to draw more than 5,000 participants this year, according to the organisers, but the marathon is not just for participants, the Mayor has said as many around the city will have free and attractively priced events, packages and meals to benefit from the event.

“Our wish is to make this the countries’ premier sporting event,” Thutlwe said. He said many are continuing to register for participation, including companies, education institutions, churches as well as interested individuals and urged Batswana to register in large numbers at designated areas like in front of Choppies stores at Rail Park mall, Gamecity and Westgate as well as at Avani Hotels and Mainmall in front of Nandos.

The main objectives of the event being Thutlwe said is among others, “to revive and re-ignite the city’s spark of being the ultimate tourism and investment destination as well as to bring the city community together to promote good health and healthy living.” The Mayor further appealed for sponsorship and more registration adding that enough is never enough for the noble objective he has set for the marathon.

“Our main objective this year is also to give back to the city hence the need to have more people as much as possible. Sponsorship is never enough and we also call upon companies to register their employees in large numbers and to keep them fit for work,” he said further adding that sponsoring companies will have more to benefit from.

Thutlwe promised a press conference next week with Botswana Athletics Association and Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) where he said they will iron out some issues that have been left behind. “We have a joint press conference on Monday with BNSC and BAA to clear all the issues to the media,” he concluded.
