Towela launches solutions for creative industry

A Botswana based photographer from Zambia, Towela Tembo will be launching a website which is an online platform that seeks to establish solutions for the everyday creativity in the arts and photography industry within Botswana.

The creative website will be launched on 21 October. Tembo’s idea of the website stemmed from her journey to Cape Town for during a brief study on photography. “Upon arrival, I was amazed at the creative industry therein and began to analyse how people do things in South Africa as compared to say Botswana and Zambia where I am originally from,” she said.

After her journey she concluded that the creative industry in Botswana is stagnant because of lack of resources catered for creatives specifically, information based resources. “We don't have limited access to up-to-date books to learn more about our individual crafts. This not only slows us down from learning from the fast-evolving styles of creatives in other countries but it minimizes our access to sources of inspiration which are important for us creating work that can compete in a global setting,” she said.

The website will serve as a ‘go-to’ source of inspiration while simultaneously acting as a skill sharpener by introducing Botswana creatives to the work of Zambia and South Africa so as to encourage them to contribute to the creatives. In the short-run, the mission is to establish a bylink between the three countries and in the long-run, create opportunities for creatives to establish their names beyond the borders of their country.

“For the time-being, the primary objective remains to develop creatives from within by focusing on issues creatives’ battle with everyday such as competition, brand identity, artistic/creative style, self-awareness and networking with likeminded people within their niche,” she said. She explained that she believe that this is the fundamental part of the creative industry that people tend to overlook.

“I desire to tackle these issues head on and by so doing, create Batswana creatives that are ready to take on the creative industry worldwide with their ground-breaking work,” she said. The website will also be a knowledge based in the sense that they also have experts from Zambia, Botswana and South Africa discussing these issues which they themselves have experiences.

There will also be giveaways, brief projects, competitions and, of course, the once in a lifetime opportunity to connect with creatives that could lead to collaborations that fuse the uniqueness of each creative and enhance their brand identity. “All this is to ensure that creatives benefit as much as possible from everything available – from the information shared to the connections with leading experts in Botswana and South Africa to better themselves and the industry at large,” she cited.
Eventually in the future, they hope to team up with other African countries and by so doing, create a continental website that speaks of the diversity and creative identity of each African country.
