Setlhare endorsed as BOTESSA president

Botswana Tertiary Student Sports Association (BOTESSA) has endorsed Keorapetse Setlhare last week Friday.  This follows the resignation of BOTESSA former president, Herbert Letsebe who citied ill-health as the main factor. As per the constitution of BOTESSA, there is no automatic succession, something which necessitated election committee to call for elections.

Setlhare was scheduled to tussle out with former secretary, Jomo Moalosi but the latter was eventually vetted out from the race dude to his pending issues with the association. The president revealed his plans to WeekendSport this week, among them introducing more sporting codes in BOTESSA competitions.  Setlhare said he want to increase the number of sporting code because the association supplies top leagues with athletes.

“You see the reason why sporting codes like Boxing and Karate are not doing well, is because they are not affiliated to BOTESSA,” he stated.  “The introduction of more codes would give national teams pool of credible athletes,” Setlhare said they will work with Botswana Integrated Sports Association (BISA) to identify talent and ensure that all the athletes who do not do well in the Botswana General Certificate for Secondary Education examination (BGCSE) are absorbed in different tertiary institutions and enroll in courses related their sport codes.

He said he will engage the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology on the matter to chart a new path. “You will  remember that last year we received a sponsorship at a tune of P3million from First National Bank Botswana( FNBB), and as results that money is not enough to cover all the activities of the associations, I will start knocking door at the corporate entities to seek for sponsorship,” he said.

Setlhare further said he will call for unity amongst the associations stating that, like any other associations, BOTESSA has factions and he will talk with all relevant people to smoke peace.  “Just last week we held FNBB BOTESSA awards and I invited all the former BOTESSA presidents to come and award the deserving athletes on the podium and this shows we are in the right path to achieve unity,” he said. He expressed that he wants BOTESSA committee to be transparent and accountable which will in turn help the association to attract sponsorship.

He said currently BOTESSA has audited financial report which is a sign of good governance. “We have the upcoming tertiary competition which will take place at Italy this year and we are hopeful to increase more sporting codes that will compete there,” he shared.
