Wimpy Riverwalk brands best cappuccinos

One of the leading restaurant franchise in the country, Wimpy held a Barista competition to mark and award the best cappuccino maker across all Wimpy outlets in Botswana. The competition held on 8 May at Cresta Lodge witnessed Wimpy Riverwalk emerging victorious.

The competition attracted nine employees of Wimpy outlets, who came from Gaborone, Francistown, Palapye, Orapa, Mahalapye, and Maun. The winner was Hope Kabatane from RiverWalk who shared that it was her second time winning the competition for Best Barista.
“I have been employed at Wimpy for five years now, I won the competition in 2017 and last year I did not enter the competition. This year I decided to enter the competition and I won again. I am so happy,” she said.

Kabatane explained that she has mastered the secret to winning the competition by ensuring that her style or approach is competent. “Most people opt to use a tulip for their ‘latté art’ or a swan so I had to master other arts I can use on my cappuccino,” she said. She also stated that she had to ensure that she is excellent with her steps when preparing cappuccino. She explained that the depth of the foam also mattered. She went home with a certificate, a cash prize of P2000 and wishes to give others a chance to win the competition.

In an interview with WeekendLife, the Operations Manager of Wimpy, Joseph Makuyana  explained that that they visit the scores made by each employee to monitor their Perfomance and ensure that they meet the expectation of their clientele. “Each Wimpy store chooses the best of the four baristas to join the competition and implement what they have seen during the competition when returning to their respective works,” he said.

He explained that the idea is to make the competition grow bigger and even better. “We chose Cresta Lodge because we take this competition serious and treat our employees as royalty because they are royal to us,” he explained. The competition witnessed Wimpy Gaborone scooping position one, two and three and he said it is because there are more people in Gaborone hence their Baristas are always busy giving them more time to practice and be excellent.

Kootlhoboge Modise from Airport Junction won position two while Akanyang Mangongola from Wimpy Game City took position three. Meanwhile, the competition will continue to run annually and store visitations will be made to ensure that baristas retain quality when making cappuccinos.
