Dambe, Masule swap posts

Former Township Rollers goalkeeper, Mwampule Masule has parted ways with South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) outfit Chippa United, and Kabelo Dambe, another ex- Rollers keeper is expected to replace him.

The Port Elizabeth based outfit is in talks with Dambe, currently playing for Bloemfontein Celtic. Masule signed with Chippa six months ago but it seemed he could not impress Clinton Larsen’s side. While the Masule’s door is closing, the gate of Dambe is fast opening. Dambe has played second fiddle to Patrick Tignyemb for the better part of his spell at Bloemfontein Celtic. It is said that Dambe is negotiating the deal with the hope of gaining more game time at Chippa United. But reports that Chippa United has also signed Tignyemb will now defy Dambe’s logic.

However, there are those who state that Tignyemb, who apparently plays a father figure role to Dambe, is the one who recommends his (Dambe)’s deals. Dambe was first signed by another South African outfit Platinum Stars in 2012. Reports say Chippa wants to sign a contract with him as his deal with Celtic is elapsing in the next few weeks. Dambe, if the deal is finalized will still deputize Cameroon international Tignyemb.

The 30-year old former Rollers’ tried and tested goal keeper is said to be close to agreeing a deal that will land him a lucrative salary annually. The Chillie boys as they are known turned their interest to Dambe knowing that he will bring the necessary competition to the current number one keeper of the team with Tingnyemb himself nearing retirement. Chippa United that prepares for a respectable position in PSL next season lost their trusted keeper to Kaizer Chiefs last season.

While at Rollers, Dambe made almost all 30 appearances conceding only fewer goals. His ability as a shot stopper and age by his side is an added advantage that United would want to cash on. Interestingly, he is the reason why Masule was always on the bench during their Rollers days. Last year Masule was supposed to be signed by Higlander Park but signed a contract extension with Rollers. He was to become the third goal keeper to be signed by a South African outfit after Modiri Marumo and the same Kabelo Dambe.

Masule as good as he is, played an assistant role to both Kabelo Dambe and Keagile Kgosipula at Rollers goal posts. It is said Highlander Park started monitoring the keeper when Rollers was playing a Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions league game against Esperance of Tunisia almost two seasons ago.  Although the keeper conceded four goals in that game, he was believed to have displayed man of the match performance where Esperance could have scored more than four goals.

How and why United registered him in the first place is still a subject of ongoing speculation. Dambe on the other hand,  first made a mark in South African football with Platinum Stars but the club fired him in a season he was about to become a first choice goal keeper. At Stars he deputized Siyabonga Mpotshane who was on his way to Orlando Pirates.

Dambe left Township Rollers under an impressive fold. He scooped all awards he was nominated for. During his 2012 era with Stars, he made 29 appearances for Platinum Stars.  Four of the appearances were recorded during his debut season while the remaining 25 came after the departure of Siyabonga Mpontshane. He altogether played 2 566 minutes for the club. He has appeared 38 times as a substitute on the bench.
