Known for her first class make up, Maxine Magwape who runs the world class beauty hub called ‘Maxine Make up,’ has revealed how she became a make-up powerhouse in the country.
She mesmerized the crowd when she laid down events that led her to being where she is today. Magwape shared this at the Stanbic Bank Lionesses Lean in Breakfast’ event, where young entrepreneurs shared their success stories. Many saw her taking the industry by storm, but the tale of how she took off remained untold, until Wednesday this week. Recollecting his journey Magwape said she grew up doing art at a very young age, where she started off with painting, drawing and sketching a lot.
Her striking skills to smash make up with her touch of magic, is one that cannot go unnoticed. The 27 year-old pint-sized beauty said her career as a makeup artist took-off after she used her savings to ignite the business. “2015 I started Maxine and social media was all I needed to do what I needed to do. I wanted to showcase my work. Most importantly marketed my brand through me and that is how I got my clients,” she said.
She further highlighted that before becoming an established beauty hub, she had to offer her services for free to people until she reached a stage where she knew how to package her A-lister game to become a brand in the market. It did not take long for her work take social media by storm and many were gliding into the comment section with a positive feedback. Having clocked 54 400 followers on Instagram, the laid back make-up guru’s extensive repertoire of work has even notched her clients in European countries.
She further said that when doing make-up she did it with enthusiastically, hence she ended up doing make-up for vulnerable groups such as women who were abused and women who are HIV positive. “What motivated me the most, was seeing people being transformed just through my work. I do things at heart and that is what motivates me the most, doing it for women,” she said.
With time, business was overwhelming and she needed to hire people so she decided to bring women on board to assist her. The business has since became the most sought after beauty brand which is even recognised in international markets. Even so, she keeps encouraging local make-up artist to learn to collaborate with each and build a strong team within the market.
“I believe in working with each other and competing with each other at the same time. They should go to other guru makeup artists and ask them how they do it. That is the only way they can get to a certain level they want to get to,” she said. She highlighted that most makeup artist have to work on their attitude.
“We need to be as professional as we can because how your attitude is to your client, will determine how they will represent you to the next client,” she said. The elegant make-up artist also hinted that make-up artist should enhance their skills regularly. She urged them to do their research as well as visiting Youtube to grow as artists.

During a press conference, Fondation L’Oréal CEO Alexandra Palt emphasized the importance of empowering women scientists in Sub-Saharan Africa, a continent that suffers greatly from climate disruption. Palt highlighted the challenges these women face, including overcoming prejudice, sexism, and harassment, to become accomplished scientists.
The finalists of the awards are scientists, PhD students, and post-doctoral researchers who are advancing various disciplines such as biology, agronomy, physics, mathematics, genetics, and engineering. Their goal is to improve the daily lives of Africa’s people, whether through advancements in health or the environment. These women, such as Dairou Hadidjatou, a pioneer in cardiovascular disease treatment in Cameroon, Esther Uwimaana, conducting research on potential tuberculosis vaccines, and Mwende Mbilo, innovating clean energy solutions in Kenya, are driven by their desire to advance science and society.
The need for scientific role models to inspire the younger generation is crucial. Palt emphasized that Africa currently represents only 2.5% of scientists globally, making it challenging for young girls in Africa to pursue scientific careers when women researchers in their countries are often invisible in the media, scientific publications, and international forums. To address this, the Fondation L’Oréal and UNESCO have increased the number of young talents awarded from 20 to 30. These researchers also receive leadership training to enhance their communication and negotiation skills, as well as their ability to address harassment and speak publicly or with the media.
