Galaxy, Orapa quarrel over Makgantai

The movement of Zebras’ robust attacker, Onkabetse Makgantai from his former South African based club, Baroka FC to Jwaneng Galaxy and later emerging at Orapa United, has left a plethora of questions without answers regarding procedures followed to register him by 31st July 2019, when the transfer window closed.

It might be that the player was a center of attraction once declared surplus to requirement at South Africa’s Baroka FC, but his mind-numbing decision to pen down two different contracts with two clubs that do not see eye to eye, has further complicated matters. Both Orapa United and Jwaneng Galaxy receive financial support from Debswana. Major as Mankgantai is religiously called, might spend the better part of this season without kicking the ball as his registration authenticity is now under fierce contention.

On the 27th of August, Galaxy wrote a complaint letter to the Players Status Committee under the administration of Botswana Football Association (BFA) requesting that Makgantai’s registration be suspended pending closure of the matter. Galaxy are adamant that the player has signed a two year deal with them and this process was done and completed on the 2nd of August 2019. “Makgantai has signed a two year contract with Jwaneng Galaxy Football Club on the 2nd of August 2019 until 31st July 2021. However, it has come to our attention that the player has been registered for the 2019-20 season with Orapa United Sporting Club,” the letter reads. On the other hand, Orapa United on the 2nd of September 2019, wrote a letter addressed to BFA’s Chief Executive Officer(CEO) enquiring  about the future of the player and whether he is eligible to play.

Orapa, too, are steadfast on their insistency that they have satisfied every requirement when registering the player and therefore are eager to field him as soon as soon as possible. They wrote that they are concerned by the disturbing posts that have been trending on social media for the better part of last week attributed to their player, Mankgatai. Orapa United points out that Makgantai is contracted to them as a football player and is registered with BFA under OUFC with license no . 000676M95. “We would like to solicit guidance and advice from your esteemed office with regards to the player, as we need his services on our 2019/20 premiership campaign,” part of the letter reads. Orapa claims to be treating the matter with the carefulness it deserves, as it also asked BFA a million dollar question, whether they will be in violation of any play rules to field the player in the premiership games.

Information gleaned from various sources at the premier league offices however point to only one conclusion.   It emerges that indeed Galaxy were the first club to approach and signed a deal with the player. However, the Jwaneng based outfit could not finish the registration processes as they had to travel to Mauritius for CAF championship game. At that time, the team left Makgantai behind because he was not part of the travelling squad. While Galaxy was away, it has become known that Orapa United approached him and convinced him to sign with them. He was later to claim a signing on fee-something he did not receive when singing with Galaxy. Orapa, therefore, completed every requirement before the deadline day and it why they are in possession of his registration book.
