MC-ing as a side hustle

Hustling is the act if grifting a mark for money in any possible way. And in this era troubled by high unemployment rates most particularly amongst young people, peddling ice cream, second hand clothes, food on the streets and being social media influencer put food on the table.

It might not necessarily mean getting a whole lot of money, but somehow it supports making ends meet.  These youngsters are working hard trying to build their hustle every day, as dreaming up a killer small business is not so simple, putting that idea into action is a whole different story.

The hustle can feel discouraging and lonely at times. Most people cannot relate to the uncertainty that comes with building something from nothing. Sometimes it’s hard to stay motivated when your friends are out having fun…while you are grinding it out day after day, year after year until your efforts pay off. There will be highs, and there will be lows. How you navigate them is more important. It’s about hustling…and refusing to ever give up.

Event hosting has since proved to be the smartest kind of hustle, for some youngsters who are determined to venture in that kind of hustle. But, one thing very significant to note is, there are no shortcuts. Being always laser focused on what you could control; your effort. Knowing your hustle and industry better than anyone else, loving what you do, and always be hustling to make things happen. I mean, the local entertainment industry is not growing, but there are opportunities in it. One got to be smart in order to be on the winning side.

MC Theo has been making strides in the entertainment industry as a host of various events, from your outdoor chilling sessions, GIMC and Sunday Ultimate Session amongst other. And frankly speaking, he is doing well as an imminent event host. His hustle faces unique challenges, his journey might not be smooth, but one thing for sure though, if he really wants it badly enough-if he is willing to pay the price of success- he will find a way to get it.

‘’I trust I was born to be an MC; it’s something I always say to people that I was born with. This is something that I am and I couldn’t not work on it. That is why it’s so important to pursue something aligned with your core values-the contributions you want to make to the world. I make decisions because I feel they are right to my kind of hustle instead of worrying so much about what everyone else is doing. I live by a philosophy; there’s always room to grow’’ he said in an exclusive interview with Weekend Life.

Born Motheo Kgoreletso, a 22-year-old was born in Molepolole. He started hosting events at school and at church; something he never thought will somehow be his source of revenue. He is a champion of authentic connection, and he brings an engaging presence, endless exuberance and dynamic people skills to his role as an MC. He mastered the art of quickly articulating and encapsulating concise takeaways and learning’s for the audience to remember.

He revealed that he uses social media, speaking experience and online tutorials and leveraging some charm and dynamic energy to enhance every event that he hosts. Just recently, he burned the floor at the biggest show in the country, GIMC Festival, for the very first time in history. I can attest to that as I was one of the first people to get there, so as not to miss a thing.

‘’I am incredibly impressed with my ability to capture the fresh audience and connect with them immediately. I am authentic and genuine in developing meaningful interaction with the crowd and to this date, it still clicks on my mind on how I introduced prominent artists from South Africa at the GIMC Festival. That was a dream come true as I grew up watching them on TV, not knowing that one day I will be doing the actual introduction of artists of that calibre’’

MC Theo has taken social media by storm and he is the most recognized MC in the country. For him to host the GIMC Festival, his wish was actually made possible by his followers who had to nominate him. Talk about blessing, he deserved it anyway. He is always prepared, easy to work with and unflappable. He makes even hosting look easy and many events were all better for his contribution. I cuss I need schoolings from him; perhaps I can make a prodigious event host too. I am jesting! This young man maintained an inspiring level of energy and focus at the GIMC Festival.

He is now a resident MC at the Sunday Ultimate Chill hosted in Gabane. Theo stressed that he was called for 30 minutes trials and he was in the game. He cited being unique and true to oneself as a winning formula to being the most recognised event host in the country. I too believe he is right, and to him I would say he should keep doing what he is doing, he is doing pretty well and hope he doesn’t give up easily. It’s a tough world out there, he got to stay focused.
