New faces at Ministry of Sport

Veteran politician and now a Member of Parliament for Molepolole South, Kabo Morwaeng alongside new comer and parliament member for Mogoditshane Macdonald Rakgare are the two likeliest candidates to assume the portfolio of the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development- WeekendSport has established.

Sources close to Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) think tanks predict that the two may be roped in at a Ministry that has seen different faces coming and going. It is believed that Morwaeng is experienced enough to carry the responsibilities that come along while the name of Rakgare as an assistant make the combination even deadlier. Rakgare, in all spheres of reasoning, is a self-proclaimed sport personality and has anchored sport shows in various local radio stations-among others; Yarona FM and Duma FM.

However, when contacted for comment, Rakgare said he has been observing the latest suggestions that he should be taken to this Ministry. ‘I do not think it is the right time to comment about it, and I do not think it is a good idea, for starts… Well, I have seen social commentators linking me with the Ministry, I do not think if they are being fair on the President. Let us all wait for the cabinet to be announced and we will take it from there,” Rakgare said.

The Ministry was headed by the now fallen Thapelo Olopeng. He was seen to be performing extremely well before the cabinet was reshuffled shortly after President Mokgweetsi Masisi took over from his predecessor, Seretse Khama Ian Khama. The Masisi cabinet shakeup meant that the Ministry saw another new face coming. It was given to Tshekedi Khama who is the blood brother of the former president. But when Khama dumped the BDP for the newly formed Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF), it meant that TK’s assistant, Dikgang Makgalemele took the reins on the road toward the just ended 2019 general elections.

While election results automatically spell a new chapter for the ruling party as well as the government, it is also in the open that Makgalemele will not return to the Ministry especially that he lost his parliamentary seat to Aubrey Lesaso of the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC). It however remains to be seen whether President Masisi will finally settle for the two above mentioned names.  Other sources also predict that Rakgare could be paired with Dorcus Makgato to run the Ministry.

Makgato lost elections but she is believed to be coming back through a specially elected seat dispensation. Makgato, as a former Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) Chairperson, is also said to be a capable candidate. Although many are calling the name of Rakgare, those close to the often outspoken MP told this publication that the former sport presenter is in fact eyeing to be given a far more challenging portfolio at the Ministry of Investment Trade and Industry. This explains why the Thamaga born parliamentarian had enrolled for Masters in Business administration and is near completion.
