Mpule distances herself from Miss Universe Botswana

Publishing Date : 07 January, 2019

The winner of Miss Universe 1999, local beau Mpule Kwelagobe has denied allegations that she is the franchise holder of Miss Botswana and that she is even planning to have the event staged this year in February.

This was after an international page linked her to be having plans of running the event this year. WeekendLife has however established that the allegations are not true after Kwelagobe confirmed the allegations not to be true. “This is not true, I do not know who have been spreading these fake reports, but I am not the franchise holder of Miss Universe and I do not have any interests whatsoever in doing so,” she said.

When contacting Safwi Sekgwa, the last organizer of Miss Universe also confirmed that the news is fake. “I saw that too. It is not true. I even discussed it with Mpule. Normally certain sites when they pick up pageant stories, they take it as an announcement. They have technologies that track the stories. They tracked the Weekend Post story together with that image of Mpule. I think Mega Pageants (the FB page) picked it up. Even the hashtag #missuniversegfx picked it up,” he explained.

The pageant that is currently faced with a lot of disorder has been quiet for quite for some time now after the pageant underwent a lot of lashes causing it to cease for a moment. However, the former license holder, Sekgwa, envisions great things for the pageant.
“I have long renewed the license by paying for it. They had sort of terminated it, because of the unnecessary controversies here.  But I explained that we were victims of sabotage and I needed to be protected,” he said.

He however also mentioned that a lot of young women are missing out on opportunity as the pageant can be used to enhance their lives. “Young people then have to suffer and get punished for what should be their fundamental right. I have made it no secret that I have not been happy with both the Khama and Masisi administrations, because young people and the regular Motswana are being ignored for their good intentions. And for their passions,” he lamented.

Sekgwa explained that Miss Universe Botswana is a pageant organized by young people for Young women for the nation and that pageants and modeling have put Botswana on the map more than anything else. “We are a diamond and tourism country. All these are symbols of beauty. Our women represent beauty and tourism and diamonds resonate with pageantry and modeling, which is why we wanted to host Miss Universe.

We wanted to showcase our tourism for 30 days. We wanted to showcase what our diamonds have done or could do but using our beautiful women as the faces of our campaign as Botswana,” he said. Meanwhile, Sekgwa has plans of re-acquiring the license and as well as staging the pageant this year.
